I wondered if it either means the Terran Empire rose again after throwing off the Cardassian/Klingon Alliance from DS9 (only to fall later, based on what Kovich says in Discovery), or this version of the Mirror Universe is based on elements from the novelverse?

I remember before DS9 showed the Mirror Universe falling, there was a TNG novel in the early 90s by Diane Duane that was all about the Terran Empire trying to invade the Prime Universe, with ISS Enterprise-D and Mirror Captain Picard leading their assault.

Indeed, the “mirror” part seems to indicate some metaphysical force is keeping the universes relatively in-sync rather than diverging ever-further apart as one would expect. So mirror-humpbacks probably were extinct for a while, and were revived somehow, though the specifics would be different.

It was never supposed to be called the “mirror universe” in-prime universe as well. That was a gaff Discovery made which they haven’t fixed.

God, I didn't think I was in any way into J/C like my 16 year old self was, but if this is the way it becomes canon, I'll take it!

They made Chakotay hot as hell in this series, I can't lie

I guess there's a degree of ambiguity as to if this was "the" mirror universe from TOS and DS9. Could have been a "Parallels" style branch off of it.

Also, they use that damned reverse Earth logo from Disco, which never appeared in TOS and DS9. Maybe it's the Disco season 1 mirror universe? Hehe...
It can't be "the" MU because, in that universe, the Empire fell long enough ago that all the 2370s characters regarded it as history. "Smiley" O'Brian, for example, hadn't known anything other than servitude.

I think "mirror universe" as in "everything is flipped opposite," is more of a convenient metaphor, not a literal condition of the alternate universe. Clearly not everything is the exact opposite.
Exactly, even in ‘Mirror, Mirror’, the Halkans were pacifists in both universes.

The original intent was just humanity was ‘evil’.

Also, they use that damned reverse Earth logo from Disco, which never appeared in TOS and DS9. Maybe it's the Disco season 1 mirror universe? Hehe...
That’s isn’t the Discovery mirror emblem, it’s the IDW comic one that was also used in Lower Decks. STO is also using it, so I think CBS is trying to unify the design language for the 24/5th century Empire. Though for some reason they mirrored the earth in prodigy

Appreciated Okona's appearance, hadn't expected that. Glad that he helped and that it brought some closure to him running off in "Masquerade".

Another good episode. Very strong run.
