Star Trek Leaving Crave?

If it moves to P+can I will just find it elsewhere as I will not pay for another platform or add-on. It's too bad as it was great on Crave and the only reason I have crave

Completely unrelated.

The Canadian government forces tv broadcasters to include "local news"

It's literally stuff no one watches but the government is forced to offer it.

As a counterpoint, local news is important. The country is large enough that it can't just be served by news from the major cities. Is this what you want? Witout local news, many smaller communities wouldn't be covered at all. I live in Northern Ontario, and news coming out of Toronto simply isn't relevant to where I live.

Anyway, regarding Bell & Trek, I think one reason this hasn't been done sooner is the fact that Bell invested in the studio that helped made Discovery, so they at least had reason for that exclusivity. Now that Discovery's no longer in production, I'm guessing the exclusivity agreement is no longer binding.

Discovery's deal was different from the other shows.
Discovery aired on CTV Sci-Fi first then appeared on Crave 24 hours later, while all the other shows have been on Crave at 3AM (Eastern) Thrusday, then CTV Sci-Fi at night the same day.

The most likely scenario of what is happening is that Bell Media's contract with CBS is set to expire and has not been renewed. In general, most deals in the television industry last five to six years, and September 2023 will mark six years since Discovery first aired (though has Tuskin38 pointed out above, CBS/Bell's deal for all Trek shows after Discovery was slightly modified allowing new episodes to be available on Crave the same day as in the US).

It's almost certain the Trek library is going to move to Paramount+ Canada this summer and SNW will also move over after its current season is finished airing. This is a similar approach to what CBS is doing with the Trek library in European markets.

I also suspect it's just a matter of time before older Trek series are removed from Netflix Canada as well.

Also, what made the Bell deal so unique is that it was perhaps the only company with a network actually broadcasting new Trek rather than just streaming it.

I've always wondered why CBC doesn't just broadcast older seasons of its Trek shows, as it could be a way to broaden their viewing numbers and help people discover it .

Back in 2016 when Bell signed the deal with CBS, I think Bell was still primarily focused on bolstering their specialty cable channels and satellite subscriptions. Crave was, at this point, still in its infancy.

CBC hasn't held any rights to Star Trek since the 90s and that was only the syndicated rights to TOS. Rights to 80/90/00s era Trek was held exclusively by CityTV which was eventually purchased by Bell Media. This raises the question if Bell is will be losing the broadcast rights to old Trek too given they still air all the old Trek shows on CTV Sci-Fi.

Or I guess there's the really convoluted "Kevin Bacon Six Degrees" a friend of mine suggested in that since it's a modern day take on Sherlock Holmes, you could think of it as an Americanized Sherlock, which was produced by former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat thus making it "genre adjacent."

It's Sherlock Holmes in the present day... so it's practically a time travel show! :shifty:

I'm primarily on Crave because it's the home of Star Trek, but Crave also has a number of other shows that make it worthwhile for me. It has Resident Alien and The Handmaid's Tale, both of which I love. I've been wanting to check out Mrs. Davis after seeing some glowing reviews. I also keep meaning to get into Yellowjackets; there just never seems to be time to watch the things I want to watch. :( And of course, IIRC, Crave is the only source of the HBO shows here in Canada.

Crave and Amazon Prime are the only two streamers I currently subscribe to (and I initially only got Prime for the free shipping! ;) )

It's almost certain the Trek library is going to move to Paramount+ Canada this summer and SNW will also move over after its current season is finished airing. This is a similar approach to what CBS is doing with the Trek library in European markets.

On the other hand, I'm not sure if Paramount+ has anything to make it worthwhile beyond Trek itself. TBF, I haven't checked out P+'s latest offerings. But back in the early days of Discovery, I got a three-month free promo of (what was then called) CBS All-Access. But since Trek wasn't on it (since it was all with Bell), there ended up being nothing on it that I was interested in. I basically went through the whole three-month free period, and never watched a thing on it.

Of course, if P+ is going to be the new home of Trek in Canada, then I will have subscribe just for that. And the good news is that it's only half the cost of Crave. But unless they've added more interesting content, then for me personally P+ has much less of a value proposition than Crave did.

They did something like that in the fall of 2020 where because of the pandemic none of CBS's regular shows were ready for their usual premiere dates in September, so CBS ran the first season of Disco. Because of the writer's strike this year, CBS has said they are looking into broadcasting other Paramount+ shows, but have not as yet indicated which ones they might air,

Also, even though it is still streaming, I understand in the US the first season of SNW is currently available for free on YouTube.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Seems to me they'd be able to use a similar strategy in order to hook people to Paramount+ by making the latest seasons available only on that. Might be time to try something like that if they're losing money.

US based link if its helpful at all...

Link no worky anymore. They've hidden all the videos.

Well according to Trekmovie , All Modern Star Trek will still air on CTV Sci-fi and stream.on the CTV app.
(For Ctv Sci-fi subscribers)
Ofcouse though, CTV app is like Pluto , that it is add supported. But atleast it will still be available for those subscribed to CTV Sci-fi. And even though it's not specifically mentioned in the article, the Legacy shows may also still air on CTV Sci-fi and be available on CTV app/CTV on demand with a CTV Sci-fi cable subscription.

Luckily I still have CTV Sci-fi due to a legacy package from my condo's bulk cable subscription.

And Ofcouse the legacy trek shows are still on Netflix Canada ( for now)

For me personally, I have access to Trek in a hodgepodge kind of way. Got TOS and TNG on blu ray. All the Trek movies from iTunes. DS9 and Voyager digitaly saved from dvds and apparently will still have access to modern Trek on CTV app and CTV Sci-fi.
Only Enterprise, I will loose on demand access to once it leaves Netflix unless it's on ctv app. I plan to slowly purchase more Trek shows on blu ray or itunes to guard against fleeting streaming rights.

Currently Paramount plus Canada has Discovery and Picard. It had everything a short while back cuz I used to watch DS9 on there.

What is going on?

The message on the show pages that said the shows were leaving Crave in July is now gone.
This is very confusing.

Thanks for the article, @trekfan_1 . Although you mainly talked about the fact that the shows will still air on the channel, there's another thing mentioned in the article that bears emphasizing for those who didn't read the article:

Trekmovie said:
Crave has confirmed with TrekMovie that it will “phase out” Star Trek content as of August 1st, including the legacy shows. In fact, subscribers can already see warnings within Crave about the different shows leaving between July 24 and July 31. The one exception is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is currently running its second season. Bell Media has confirmed that Strange New Worlds will be available to stream on Crave until the fall.

So Crave/Bell has confirmed that Star Trek is leaving. I think this is the first time we have seen such a confirmation. Some people were suggesting earlier that perhaps it was just a case of agreements being renewed, and the shows would ultimately stay, but that does not seem to be the case.

It's still unfortunate that it's leaving Crave, but it is at least good to now have confirmation from the source.

The message on the show pages that said the shows were leaving Crave in July is now gone.

It just looked to check, and I still see the dates there.

Yeah, that definitely clarifies things. With that said, I think as Canadians, we've been incredibly lucky for having Trek on Space/CTV Sci-Fi/Crave for as long as we have. It's the end of an era.

But atleast it will still be available for those subscribed to CTV Sci-fi
Unless one is a Videotron cable subscriber in Quebec. All online access to Bell Media specialty channels (which require inputting your cable company account number to access) are withheld by Bell from Videotron because the owners/boards of each have been in a “death match” over fees and other things for nearly 20 years. As such, I have to make sure to PVR anything on those channels or it’s gone after it airs. Just FYI for a small subset of Canadian viewers.
