SPECULATION for Last Episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks 5x10

Morpheus 02

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Please no spilers....but if you have any specultion as to what will happen in the final episode.... i personally would love to see it...and see how it pans out.

At the weekly Zoom meeting, it was mentioned that when news ofcancellation came, and extra 7 or so minutes were added. One of the ideas was that we might see the FULL cast in live action. We already saw 2, and it was suggested it could be relative "easy" to do.

Also, we were thinking about which guest actors could show up...such as finally with O'Brien, as he was suggested to be the "most imporant member in Starfleet history".... and my thought/wish of William Shatner....where he can "finallY" give Kirk a "real" ending. (Especially with Shatner's age...that would be "wise" if he were finally willing)

I thought i JUST had -- would they show the crew in the "modern" (Picard Season 3) age? Where could they be at THAT point? And would that be animated or live action?

What do you guys think...?

I would very much like to see the cast in live action, but I sincerely doubt that's going to happen, because I'm sure news of that would have leaked out by now.

I'm assuming that the name of the last episode was changed from it's original name, that it is just going to be a standard LDS episode, and that those extra eight minutes will show the crew getting new assignments on different ships and 'catching up' with the timeline of Prodigy and PIC.

I also think we will see the characters in live action. I think Riker and the Titan will be back. I'm also expecting Shatner, Brooks, or Bakula to be involved for a big cameo.

When it looks like shit has truly hit the fan and all hope is lost, Starfleet's Greatest swoops in to save the day: Chief Miles O'Brien. And he's joined by all the other O'Briens of other universes proving the one constant across the multiverse: You can always rely on Chief O'Brien to solve any problem. Epilogue takes place in that classroom in the distant future we saw at the end of Temporal Edict in S1 where the teacher is telling the class the fates of all the Lower Decks cast, though the class gets bored and wants to hear more about Chief O'Brien. We then get a beauty shot flyby of the Cerritos, its nacelles glow as though it's about to go to Warp, but then it makes that broken dishwasher sound the Excelsior did in in TSFS when it tried to chase the Enterprise and all lights go dark.

I think we'll definitely get quite a few new cameos. Jadzia seems quite likely given the Kurzon-T'Pol thing in the last episode, she'll transfer his memories to her. I'm also expecting Trip to appear given they made sure to mention him several times last episode, and since Connor Trinneer already was in the studio for a Very Short Trek. I also think we'll definitely get Prime Universe Kim with the reveal that he has achieved a very high rank in Starfleet -- such as him being a Captain even though Voyager only returned home a few years prior. However, I'm really waiting for William Shatner to show up in some capacity. I'm 100% convinced they've been meeting with his agent nonstop, it's only a matter of whether he wants to do it. I would be beyond shocked to see Sisko honestly, I really just don't think Brooks will do it.

All that being said, I don't want them to spend all their time doing cameos for legacy characters, I'm hoping we get a good resolution for the main characters, given this is the final episode of their series.

I'm just kidding, I think the show will end in a dramatic moment, a fade to black with a "To be continued..." and the trailer for the Star Trek: Lower Decks: Upper Decks movie starts playing.

Were it not for “Those Old Scientists”, I could have seen the last episode revealing that LD isn’t actually set in the Prime universe at all. But they did the SNW crossover, so that’s unlikely.

I feel like I'm a bit of an outlier in this thread in that a) I have no particular desire to see them in live action, and b) I don't really want the final episode to be a cameo-fest, and instead want to focus on our main cast. I just want Lower Decks to go out being... Lower Decks.

I'm hoping that episode 9 was their big cameo episode, and they don't feel the need to one-up it with episode 10.

One thing I had sort of thought about... the finale in the last season had all the California class ships coming together to handle the threat; I'm wondering if this season if maybe a bunch of different Cerritoses across the multiverse will somehow have to work together to save the multiverse?

(A quick visual gag where one of the Cerritoses has a live-action crew could actually work, so if they decide to do a live-action bit that way, I wouldn't object.)

I also wouldn't say no to a DSC-style flash-forward at the end to check in with the gang later in the timeline.

Someone with the ability to save the universe is needed... so they fly into the wormhole, switch to the white void... and convince The Sisko to return and save the day. Perhaps echoing his own speech to the prophets when they removed the Dominion fleet. Sisko stops the threat and says he has one more thing to do. Cut to Jake writing something, there's a flash, he looks at the camera, shocked face, and says: Dad...?! He reaches out... they touch, pull close, and hug. End of the series.

No live action, please. With the show being cancelled for money, I can't see them pouring it over generating sets and getting the characters into costumes on short notice. Isn't Noël Wells on record for not wanting to undergo the Orion makeup?

I hope we get an emotionally satisfying ending, not one "for the lulz" with Boimler getting demoted again or somesuch. Specifically, I hope they finale puts the main five in a place where they can be easily brought into Star Trek Online.

If the show ends with the destruction of the Cerritos and the introduction of the Cerritos-A, then that would hopefully be something Fanhome or elsebody makes a model of - we're still being left high and dry with the Kelvin Enterprise-A.

So, was this episode produced before they knew the show was getting canceled? If it was, then 90% of it is just going to be a standard LDS ep, maybe with a cliffhanger. It’s not going to be live-action or chock full of cameos. The extra eight minutes will probably be the point where we see the crew getting new assignments.

^ It has been reported that the episode was written before they knew the show had been cancelled, but that they allowed McMahan to add another 7 to 8 minutes of extra content to wrap the show up.

That said, I’m honestly surprised to see how many expect or wish the final episode to be another cameo fest or see them make a stunt like showing them as live action characters. I seriously doubt that that’s what’s going to happen and I suspect Mike McMahan is clever enough to end the show as what it is (an animated comedy cartoon, that is) and not as what it never was. And frankly, after the penultimate episode I don’t really want the finale to another episode that heavily features stunt casting. And I can’t say I really want Shatner to be in this, to be honest.

I also think there’s a big likelihood that while there will be some closure brought to the show, it’s actually ends up being more open ended than most expect. I do think McMahan would jump on the chance to do another season of the show at some point if given the chance or continue it in some other format (a streaming movie, perhaps), which is why I believe he’d prefer it to be left at least a little open ended. That and a good writer will always leave you wanting to see more. ;)

And lastly, I also doubt we’ll see much in the way of universe / world building and connecting this to Picard or whatever. They always seemed pretty comfortable in having their own little corner of the timeline. I just don’t see them wanting to end the show on a note of being some sort of prelude to another show. That would totally not feel like Lower Decks.

I also think we'll definitely get Prime Universe Kim with the reveal that he has achieved a very high rank in Starfleet -- such as him being a Captain even though Voyager only returned home a few years prior.
Given he was supposed to be a Captain in his appearance in Picard S3 had that happened, that'd make one hell of a weird career progression for him. Nearly a decade as an Ensign, then promoted directly to Captain where he stays for twenty years.

Another thing to consider is the whole reason he didn't end up in Picard was because Prodigy had plans for him. Given the lead time for animation, this season was likely written before Paramount+ dropped Prodigy, so unless Prodigy was going to have Captain Harry Kim in the 2380s, this show wouldn't have been able to show him promoted that far. Indeed, I think it likely Prodigy's plans might be why we only see alternate versions of Harry.
Isn't Noël Wells on record for not wanting to undergo the Orion makeup?
She wouldn't need to. In the modern live action shows all the Orions have had their skin turned green digitally in post-production.

No, they actually don’t, as far as I know. On Discovery they actually used silicone masks that were spray painted green. Here’s a spread from “Star Trek Discovery: The Art of Glenn Hetrick's Alchemy Studios”, a book about the makeup on Discovery. And here’s a timelapse video of an actor getting into the Orion makeup. On Strange New Worlds however they seem to be back to just painting the actors green, although I can’t find anything definitive right now. But that’s what it looks like to me.

I was basing my comments on early trailers for Disco S3, which were released fall 2019, which shows a bunch of what appears to be white humans in the crowd of bad guys from the season premiere. In the actual episode, all those white humans were in fact green Orions.

Interesting. I didn’t know about those. Sounds like that’s the route they went with for background Orions then, whereas the “hero” Orions we would be seeing up close and in HD were getting actual green prosthetics.

I still hope no live action. Perhaps as a TV movie down the line if Section 31 breaks all records.
