Sony wants AI video game characters

At this point I honestly can't tell if they're aware of the irony and that's why they're doing it or if they seriously thought this would be the perfect franchise to try this hideous AI idea with. lol

So many corporations chasing some kinds of AI gimmick. We are in really loopy times

I get why though. They figure they can churn out content without having to pay so many people to do actual work.

Skyrim mods have been doing this for years with companion mods and other mods. It’s been a huge controversy in modding because AI generates the voice actor’s voice without their input or permission. While in theory big companies like Sony have media rights and may compensate the actor, it is beyond unnerving to me to simply generate someone’s voice and likeness this way. It’s an area rife for abuse in both entertainment and the real world.

As for doing this with Aloy…. omg

That's why a lot of voice actors like Ashly Burch who voice Aloy are on strike or boycotting studios because of the loss of their rights as artists.

This is actually quite irking and horrifying because now they can possibly do movies with dead actors.... The thought of that really makes me squirm

I can see AI chatbots being useful in old school adventure or rpg games. Imagine Zelda or similar where the NPCs say different things every time you speak to them.
Random town NPCs are probably the best use of this tech and there’s nothing wrong with AI generated companion mods (just ones that generate an actor’s voice without their Input). But even for main NPCs it’s a pretty terrible idea. Imagine the Bloody Baron quest with AI generated voices and voice acting.

That said imagine using it to talk to the billboards and Ads in a game like cyberpunk. There are places where it could def. add to an environment but devs will have to be thoughtful about it.

This technology is already available to the public and can be easily integrated into any game.

I knew about some of those and the Leia thing. I still find it kind of creepy

There's a detective game, I forget the name of it, that uses AI to process player's voices in realtime to answer questions. I much prefer this kind of usage to the kind of usage to replicate an actor's voice.
