I've seen a few rumblings since the first trailer that the concept for Picard is pretty much that of the fan film Renegades but with Sir Patrick Stewart in the lead. Certainly there are superficial similarities: A ragtag crew, a civilian ship with some over-the-top abilities, top-secret Section 31ish missions, Starfleet as an antagonist, lashings of over-the-top fanwank and Trek cameos.
I'm not saying CBS ripped off Renegades, because certainly the idea of a Star Trek series away from Starfleet has been around forever (Star Trek III ended with the TOS crew as outlaws on a stolen Klingon ship). But would those who have actually seen Picard still say the concepts are similar?
