SNW computer AI and voice

Why do you think it's a stupid idea?

Star Trek is all about Technology and futurism.

I’m not on board with the notion that Majel should be the voice of every Trek computer in every era — that seems silly — but she was the voice of this particular Enterprise computer, and I’d be fine with having that continue if it can be done naturally (or maybe I should say appropriately robotically).

Which is very different than getting excited by a tawdry gimmick. Same thinking that goes into getting worked up over deepfaking old actors into recreations of old series. Uber-lame distractions.

Recreating the dead doesn't strike me as looking to the future.
Honoring those who are important to this franchise is kinda nice, and it's such a small and simple part that uses technology.

Hollywood is already trying to figure out how to "Deep Fake" and preserve all the old actors for time immemorium.

Agree, but this is a robot computer voice that barely speaks. My car says more, and I have no idea if that person is alive or dead or is/was even a person. Majel’s voice wouldn’t be nearly as distracting as reanimating a dead Peter Cushing or creating a conspicuously fake performance from Carrie Fisher, IMO. And Majel gave her explicit blessing, so if she doesn’t care, why should I?

No one does. I do. That's how I feel about it. It's a weird, completely irrational, stupid as shit, opinion. But, I'll stand by it right now. By all means, go for it. Majel's voice would be more distracting for me.

What about the young Luke SkyWalker Deep Fake? Were you bothered by it?

Little distracting because of the CGI, but I had no objection to the idea. Didn’t spoil my enjoyment.

I guess where I draw the line is creating performances for dead actors without their approval. That’s insulting and disrespectful.

Majel gave permission for them to use her voice in this way before she died, she even recorded a bunch of words for some company I don't remember the name of to do that.

So I don't have issue with it, since she didn't seem to have an issue with it.

They can only "recreate" dead actors performances in the sense that I can "recreate" a hundred dollar bill with a laser printer.

Fakery can, I suppose, stimulate and satiate the appetite of the superficially observant.

Even back in TOS Starfleet computers were artificially limited. They met enough convincing AI's and androids for Starfleet's equivalent to be similarly convincing should they want it to be.

With a deliberately limited system, I'd very much like Majel's voice to stay.

That's pretty cool about Barrett's wish. It could be weird but I think I could appreciate it.

I kind of always have trouble with seeing things with dead actors. I can usually get over it quickly but the realization of hearing "echoes" of someone who once lived and breathed can be troubling. I can get stuck thinking about life and death sometimes if I'm not careful.

The way I see it, it's appreciating the work of somebody who has passed; it's one more method of memorializing a dead persons work / legacy and paying honor and tribute to them.

Even if it's just a tiny little bit part that doesn't really affect the larger whole of the story.
