Sell Me on TAS, Please

Watching TOS on Blu-ray for the first time, and it's been so long since I've seen the show, most episodes feel like a first watch. I am loving this show. Here is how I remember the 3-season run. S1 = more intellectual and philosophical, S2 = more active driven, and S3 = so campy, the camp folk be like, too much. It's my understanding that TAS's short 22-episode run is accepted as an animated 4th season, is that right? I find the barely animated animation infuriating. What do you get from TAS that I'm missing? I am all ears. :vulcan: Eyes?

TAS does have limited animation, strange colour choices, and everyone the crew meets sounds like either James Doohan or Majel Barrett, but it is shockingly faithful to TOS in a lot of ways. They kept the ship the same, the uniforms the same, and didn't even replace the crew with children. In fact they got most of the original actors back, which is where a lot of the budget went.

TAS is like TOS unrestrained by the limitations of '60s visual effects and the basic laws of reality, so it could get as wild as the writers' imaginations. Personally I was happy that the series was considered non-canon, as a lot of the stuff that happens is downright bizarre and doesn't fit with the franchise overall. But if you're into that kind of absurdity, TAS will give you full TOS-style stories streamlined to get to the point in half the time. And once you're out of live-action episodes and movies, it's the only place you'll get new banter between Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley. Well, aside from the video games.

You sound like you’re already sold on the show. What else is there that you need to know?

Stories and characters. It has a wonderful fantastical perspective on the universe, using the animated format to show concepts difficult to do for the era.

Get great insight in to Spock, so moments to shine for Uhura and Chapel, plus Arex.

It's a great adventure, in line with the action/adventure stylings of TOS.

This programme will only be available to purchase for a time even more limited than it's animation. Don't hesitate, don't even think about making a well informed decision, buy it now!

I'm revisiting TOS, meaning the 3 seasons and 6 movies. When I finish TOS, I thought about giving this a go before moving on to TMP. How do you feel about the barely animated animation? Is "animated 4th season" a fair descript?

Sold on TOS, yes. Sold on TAS? Not yet.
I have TAS Blu-ray in my Amazon wish list. :techman:

Please use the multi-quote function (like I’ve done here) instead of posting 3 times in a row.

Thanks.

What are you missing? I'd say the stories. Yes, the animation is underwhelming, but some of the stories are as good as anything live-action Trek has produced.

People hate it and say the only great episode is Yesteryear. I disagree. While it's not great, the animated series did some wacky stuff, and had some great titles. The Magicks of Megas-Tu, for example is an episode you probably wouldn't see as live action, and it dealt with Satan. How Sharper than a Serpants Tooth and Counter Clock Incident are awesome episode titles, and the episode with Giant Spock is crazy, yet endearing. Was it a good series? No, but it had it's charm.

original voices and script writers are a big plus.

i really wish someone would fan-edit TOS effects and music into them. my biggest problem is the altered 70s musical cues.

The following in franchise continuity episodes would like to have a word with you.

TOS Spock's Brain & Way to Eden
TNG A Fistful of Datas
DS9 One Little Ship
VOY Distant Origin
SNW Subspace Rhapsody
