Scotty has been cast! And now Sulu too!

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Wow.. that was... random...

I really wasn't expecting that casting, I have to say. I'm not sure on my feelings on it either. Simon Pegg is an excellent comedy actor, Hot Fuzz is fantastic. Now i guess we get to see if he can pull of an iconic and (mostly) serious role.

By the way, does this throw any spanners in the works regardign cast billing? He's a much more accomplished name than anyone else in the cast, does that mean he'll get a high billing?

But I definitely don't see him playing James Doohan.

Good thing too. If they were hiring actors purely to do imitations of the actors who played the parts before them I wouldn't have any interest in this film.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Wow. That was quite a wake-up-and-check-the-boards surprise. Really wanted McGillion, but we'll just have to see how it pans out. I'm not that familiar with Pegg but rest assured I'll be Youtubing his tag to learn more about him. Cho? veh. Never heard of him. At least Chekov will have someone to talk to now.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I don't really care for John Cho, but at least people know who he is.

Simon Pegg definitely needs to dye his hair for the role. I've never seen any of his movies so I can't really offer an opinion.

I'm sure someone can do better...

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Simon Pegg kicks ass. As an actor, I can say, "Simon Pegg is an awesome actor!". And John Cho is an excellent choice for Sulu, that guy's got talent too. This film just keeps getting better with every new report.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

He will be fine, as long as he plays Scotty as the thoughtful intelligent engineer he was in TOS season 1 and TMP, and not as the screaming idiot he became in the rest of the Trek incarnations.

I'm not sure about that. He's a big name in the UK but I'm not sure how well known he is in the states. He's not exactly Clive Owen in leading man terms.

But this can be to his advantage as he'll receive more exposure. After all, Star Wars was filled with relative unknowns, and look at the end result.

Oh I agree, and I love the guy- have done since Spaced came out years ago- but he isn't going to rank top billing, or anything close to it, in a big budget Hollywood film.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Don't understand all the hate for Simon Pegg.
His delivery has always been "serious" - the laughs come from the context.
Scotty was always the funniest character on TOS; he had precisely the same kind of delivery.
Does Scotty have to have dark hair?

I've never seen Stargate: Atlantis, so I don't know this McGillion person you speak of.

That's cool. IMHO, Owen just doesn't look the part of an engineer. Having recently watched Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz I have become an admirer of Mr Pegg. I look forward to his presence in this film.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

This thread is more proof that there's no way they're going to please everybody with the casting. Just wait till they announce McCoy and Kirk (which at this rate I almost expect to hear by the end of next week).

For me, I've never heard of the new Sulu so he's a fresh plate. And Simon Pegg is an excellent choice for Scotty. I might actually go see this now, just to see how he handles the role. It's great to have someone with Doctor Who connections in Trek as well (Pegg had a major guest-starring role in the 2005 season, and also narrates the Doctor Who Confidential behind-the-scenes show).

Cheers!

Alex

Re: Scotty has been cast!

This is bloody awesome!

Simon Pegg is a hoot and Cho is a great actor who can do comedy (Harold and Kumar) and drama (he played a patient on House during the first season and did a fantastic job.)

I am very, very happy with these bits of casting news.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Anyone who can say "The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe" shouldn't have trouble with engineering technobabble.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Kinda surprised about Cho; not that he doesn't look the part (and look younger than he is, as the article mentioned), but 35 years old? They must really be planning to only do the trilogy and then move on.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I love Simon Pegg's work too, but I really can't see him as Scotty.

Of course he already had red on him, so...

/was rooting for Mcgillion

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I can't see Pegg as Scotty either, but i have faith. Abrams has done an excellent job casting so far, so will i trust that he has an idea of what to do with Scott and is going with it. I like casting Cho as well. Two very interesting choices.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

So, in the SFF thread I suggested that they cast a Scottish actor as Scotty, mainly because I actually thought that Stargate: Atlantis dude would be a better choice than Pegg. But that's just me.
After seeing him with his English accent all the time, I don't think I can buy a Scottish droll from his mouth... hell, his brief American accent in Band of Brothers was kind of strange.

As for Cho... I dunno, there's the whole Korean/Japanese thing. But then again, they did that with Hoshi as well... and Wang, actually.
