How do you feel about "Relics"?

I'll just add to the fact that the episode itself is called "Relics" that should end this debate right here and now. And said how they felt about "Scotty." You can't get more in your face than that.

Depends how you take the word 'relic' I suppose.

On the one hand it's a pejorative, but on the other, it can be used to describe something of immense value and interest.

Right. A Relic can be synonymous with a scrap of junk, or a prized antiquity & as with many TNG titles there's often a twofold meaning reflected, like Allegiance, where half the episode deals with forming an allegiance & the other deals with testing one, or The Price, involving both the sale of the wormhole & Deanna's integrity, or even The Next Phase, that centers around both the next generation of phase tech or the next phase after death, which is also a theme.

If anyone's interested, Bateman returns in the novel "Ship of The Line," along with Scotty. It's not a great novel but it's fun. Imagine a Trek series with Grammer and his crew instead of a "reboot" of Frasier that pales in comparison to the original series.

Did you write the story?

As far as the episode title goes, I felt it referred to the Dyson Sphere as a relic, and to Scotty's feeling of being a kind of relic, now that from his perspective everything he knows is obsolete by about 80 years, not that he was a relic. If anything, the message of the episode went the other way. He was on his way to retirement, even 80 years ago, but at the end of the episode, he reverses that decision.

Like I said, it's the last thing we hear about Scotty and his future and this is not really satisfying...

A send off, alone, in a small shuttlecraft, alone in a giant universe where he knows absolutely no one and nothing about the tech or politics of the time. Terrible fate.

The ending is kind of hilarious - they just bundle Scott into a shuttle with zero warning, without asking what his plans are. Maybe he was off to the holodeck that very afternoon to learn about modern warp cores but no, off you go. Byeeee!

Practically shoving him out the door.

Shuttles can do, what, warp 3? Are they even anywhere near a planet he'd actually want to visit?

He's all like " You're giving me one of your shuttles?" I half expected them to answer "I wouldn't use the word giving. More like offloading you onto" :guffaw:

Well, at least he wasn't passively shoved out of the doors, he seemed to have his own plans. We don't know what these plans were, but we know they were 'not Norpin, that's for old people'.

PICARD (holds out hand) Bon voyage, Mister Scott.
SCOTTY: Can't I stay for a little longer? You certainly don't seem to have a shortage of empty quarters here!
PICARD (scrapes his throat and with a bit more emphasis this time) Bon voyage, Mister Scott!
SCOTTY: But .... I wanted to learn a bit more about the 24th century first, so much has changed!
PICARD You'll learn faster on your own feet and I'm sure you'll do fine. Life has to be experienced.
<
a beat>
Picard: In fact, I'd say, count yourself lucky you didn't end up 100 years into your past. You'd be listening to some inane gazelle metaphor right now.

Man, Picard even told him up front he wanted to hear him talk about his time. Doesn't even seem like that happened :angryrazz:

I also realize they were playing it for a joke that Scotty was wary of Worf, cuz Klingons are trouble in his day, but it might've been nice to get some amends made there too, instead of "we'll just cautiously eye each other up there, Mr. Guy from a species I don't trust"

I loved it. It was truly a joy to see James Doohan again and he was completely and utterly charming.

Geordi, however, was an absolute asshole. Last time I rewatched the show I was surprised at just what a dick he often was, whether it’s bullying Barclay in Hollow Pursuits or being an utter creep to Leah Brahms, he really could be a total ass. By far the most egregious example, however, was his behaviour toward Scotty! It was like watching somebody kick a puppy.
