Questions about Seasons 3-5

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard

I gave S1 a rewatch and loved it. I'm 4 or so episodes into S2, loving how it's starting. This is my 2nd viewing of the series. The first time, I got 5 episodes into S3. I wasn't loving the 3rd season, I was watching other shows, and I lost track. I'm curious, what does everyone here who likes the show think of S3-5, and how do these 3 seasons overall compare to the first 2 seasons? Do you think the show should have been 32nd century from the word go? I actually like that it starts off as a TOS prequel spin-off, then mid-series, the distant future.

I do not mind light spoilers but try not to spoil character deaths/departures and major events. Thank you. :)

Season 3 through 5 is still a mixed bag for me. I personally really enjoy Season 3, and find the steps taken to help the crew cope with the massive change, then dealing with the new landscape of the 32nd century was interesting.

Season 4 is to me just a blast.

Season 5 had that languish towards the middle, but overall was good with the characters.

Personally, I think that Discovery should have been a 26th century show from the beginning. If you wanted the Legacy character connection with Burnham as Sarek's ward, Tuvok could potentially fill that role. The Klingons becoming belligerent against would have worked against the backdrop of the ending of the Dominion War and a new era of peace that they chafe against, like in TNG and DS9.

I like Discovery as it stands but certainly see places I personally would modify it. That's me though. I overthink everything.

Did you mean 26th or 25th century? Did the Klingons ever pop up in later seasons? They're supposed to be a relatively close neighbor to Earth, explaining why Starfleet's always running into them.

DSC was on odd series to be a prequel. It never felt like a prequel even when it was a prequel... and I considered that a good thing because I'm not normally a fan of prequels!

I liked everything else about the series, so I turned a blind eye to it, but I was soooooo glad when DSC jumped into The Future. I said, "No more Stupid Prequel Arguments!" You'll notice I'm pretty scarce in the SNW Forum.

I'm not a fan of ENT either.

What did you like and dislike about Discovery?
Technically, Disco is already in the future, so they jumped further into the future. :p
Why no love for SNW?

When I watch the shows, I try not to get caught up in fandom hate / nitpicking. I just sit back with my dog and enjoy the show.

SNW is the opposite of everything I want. It reads like a big fat "Sorry about Disco!" Fuck that. I'm also into darker, serialized storylines.

My take on Disco and SNW: the Disco producers/writers wanted creative freedom and wanted to retool the show, so off to the distant future. However, the pre-TOS timeframe plus the new Pike and Spock proved popular, so we got SNW so we could "stay" in the timeframe that Discovery left behind. It felt like they were trying to give fans more of what they wanted.

If you like dark serials, would you like a few modern recommendations?

26th or late 25th. Don't need Picard era bumping up.

Klingons did not pop up thankfully. Overused anyway.

Certainly.
All of Us Are Dead (Netflix - zombies)
Fringe (Amazon or Max - CSI meets X Files)
Gotham (Max - Batman prequel)
Jericho (Paramount+ - post-apocalyptic farm town survival)
Lost in Space (Netflix remake)
Roswell (Hulu - aliens among us, from a teen POV - not dark, but very serial, very dramatic)
Sanctuary (not sure where it's streaming - ageless woman protects monsters)
Star Trek: Picard (Paramount+)
Stranger Things (Netflix - 1980's & monsters)
Surface (Roku, I think - sea monsters)
Sweet Home (Netflix - monsters)
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Hulu - follows 2nd film)

That should keep you busy.

I've seen half of these, thanks! And, as you might know, I like PIC just a little bit more than DSC. ;)

And now you probably know why I'm looking forward to S31.

Right now I'm going through DS9 again, B5, and The Expanse. After I'm done with those, I'll look at some other stuff.

I'm amazed at how accurate Stranger Things is. Looks just like when I was a little kid.

Zombies aren't normally my thing. And the Batman show I'm really interested in seeing is Penguin.

I forgot to include the Stargate franchise.
What caught your eye that you haven't seen or finished?
Two more: The Gifted and Legion, Marvel mutant-themed TV shows.

I am a 90's kid who's parents didn't care about trends and having new stuff, so my 90's childhood had a lot of 80's influence. I grew up on 80's movies too. Yes, it is very accurate (Stranger Things).

I’m fine with the show as is, in both periods. It’s useful to keep in mind that the show isn’t really about the Klingon War and then the 32nd century; it’s about the story of this character and crew.

While true, the Klingons were central to S1 and still played a big role in S2. In ST, the Klingons are one of the few recurring aliens. They appear frequently in TNG and DS9. They find their way into VOY despite the DQ setting. They continued to play a role in 3 of 4 seasons of ENT. It just seems weird for them to be completely absent across all 3 distant-future seasons of Disco. Not one episode, not one Klingon?

I’d certainly have liked to see future-Klingons (and hope/assume we will in Starfleet Academy), but again — not the most important thing.

I think with Strange New Worlds starting and Picard getting a Klingon on the main cast it was a good time for Disco to give the Klingons a rest. It had caught so much flak for contradicting other shows in season 1 and 2 that it made sense to just walk away after making a clean break from its past.

Why not feature the Klingons with the TNG-era look like Worf on PIC S3 and Klingons on SNW? We can't have like 5 Klingon episodes scattered across 3 seasons?
