Primeval: The Greatest Show of the 90s? New Viewer's Thoughts

Okay, so my wife's young cousins just got us into Primeval on Netflix. I'd heard about it before, and thought that one day I might try it out. We just finished Series 3 last night. Here are my thoughts on the show.

While watching the first episode, I was struck by how much I was reminded of shows that I watched as a kid, including the Land of the Lost revival. The cheap FX, the dialogue, the pacing and the insane gaps in logic left me thinking that this show would have been considered the greatest show of its time had it aired in 1993. Felt just a little dated.

I also got the feeling that it was like a non-pervy version of Torchwood. One that my family would actually watch.

I liked the action, and the FX get much better later on. The arcs actually (to my mind) hold up much better than anything that has been seen on NuWho (especially Moffatt's version), but the individual stories require a lot of suspension of disbelief. There are so many times where I was left saying "That makes no sense," or "Why don't the just..." or "That wouldn't work because..."

An example of this would be in a late episode of Series 2 (the finale?) a rampaging mammoth is herded into a semi trailer. The thing just stops once inside. It does not attempt to escape, does not tip over the trailer or anything.

Some story arcs are aborted. This happens because actors leave the show all the time; apparently it is not fun to work on Primeval, according to departed actors. The writers then decide to kill them off and leave their stories unresolved, or in some cases kill them off after massively rewriting the character's personality and motives.

Nevertheless, the show is great fun because it scratches an itch for fun action that (usually) the whole family can watch. If you try it out, you'll likely be hooked on the teaser of Episode 1.3 or the battle between a "Future Predator" and a gorgonopsid in 1.6.

Series 4 and 5 make up a new arc with Al;exander Siddig joining the cast, and brings the show to a conclusion. I like the show, I know many thought it really something when Cutter left, and never recovered, but, I found something to enjoy all the way through.

I'm Anxiously awaiting the Amanda Tapping Produced/Directed(?) Canadian spinoff filming now "Primeval: A New World", hoping it will be pretty decent. Funny thing, I always put Primeval and Sanctuary next to each other on my DVD shelf, so, interesting that she's involved with the Canadian spinoff.

It's one of only two shows on ITV that I watch - it's a lowest common denominator channel that makes the normal crud I get on cable look watchable !

It's real crap, but I do sort of enjoy it...

Yup. And yes, I meant if it came out in 1993. The storytelling, FX and everything else would have been considered top-notch. It's really bad when so many of your actors (like 5 at this point) want to leave.

Just looked up the spinoff. Excited to see the Reeves-Stevenseseses attached, as well as Akiva Goldsman doing the feature.

Not excited to see that Niall Matter is still working. He ruined Eureka. :(

I made a bet with myself that it would take 3 posts for the guy who didn't read anything but the title and come in and point out the mistake. Was I right?

I doubt its dated on purporse, it's just ITV for you

It might have been ITV trying to capitalise somewhat on the success of DW following it's uncancellation and humalliating ITV in the ratings. So the ITV execs came up with there own Sci-Fi based show.

Primeval was never good.

This is so patently evident whenever you try to watch it that it says a lot about how desperate ITV were that they kept recommissioning it.
To each their own. I found something worth watching in each of the 5 Series, and some of it was quite entertaining. Sure, it had some problems, but, I certainly don't regret the time I spent watching it, and I do have all 5 Series recorded from TV onto DVD and will watch it all the way through again some day
