Spoilers Pablo Hidalgo..........

KennyB

I have spoken............

I remember just a few years ago Pablo Hidalgo was very interactive with fans on Twitter......often answering almost any tweet he was tagged in. He was on many episodes of The Star Wars Show answering questions about lore and the Star Wars Multiverse. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that his Twitter was now private and he was lasted as "retired". Huh, I thought......I had not noticed that before but OK..........well earned I guess.

So I wake up today to see he's been mocking a fan/YouTube guy for crying over Luke's return in episode 16 of The Mandalorian........What happened? Did he fall out with Lucasfilm over the past few years? Just having a bad day?

That sounds about right for Pablo. For the record, I don't think he's being malicious, he just has a very sarcastic and sardonic sense of humour. I totally get why he made his account private; precisely because he was originally so open that he became a target for every whinging manchild with a gripe about <insert literally every possible opinion a Star Wars fan might have here>. That'd make anyone but the most masochistic want to duck out.

And just to be clear, this isn't just a fan being emotional, it's a grown ass adult fan filming themselves being overly emotional over a TV show, for profit. That always deserves to be treated with a degree of cynicism.

That makes more sense..........I see now this guy is a fan film producer and is riding this for clicks. It just popped up on my news feed this morning. Hate Pablo gave him an excuse for people to make a big deal of it. I'm gonna be 50 soon and I am kinda amazed at all the people that post videos of themselves watching TV shows.

There is something to be said for reaction videos (especially in the world today) that allow one at least the illusion of enjoying a show with friends. Indeed, when they're watching older material blind, it's basically the same as the "first time watch" threads we have on this very board, just in a different medium.

All that said, as with many things where there's money to be made there's inevitably an unsavoury underbelly. While may do so in good fun and keep it genuine. Some "reactors" seem to specialize in histrionics to drive traffic. If they're kicking up a fuss from someone ribbing them like this, my suspicion is that they fall in the latter category, since the former would either play along or shrug it off.

Star Wars Theory is a channel I treat with a grain of salt. I appreciate his passion and a lot of his content is decently done. But, he takes a the sense of fan ownership to such an extent that it is hard to take seriously. I mean, I appreciate the vulnerability of letting that SW geek flag fly but at the same time there needs to be some measure of being thick skinned regardless of how people respond.

Easy for me to say but I just see that intensity of reaction is just odd to me.

It depends. Sometimes it's pure, but sometimes it's performative. This I think is more the latter than the former.

I'm sure a lot of young female fans who grew up on TCW teared up at Ahsoka's live action debut, so I'm not about to begrudge anyone having and emotional reaction...but at the same time one must keep such things in perspective.

I have to be honest, unless a person is severely mentally disabled or has illnesses, those videos of people crying about Star Wars because Luke turned on a lightsaber or the Falcon turn up make me cringe really hard.

This is how I see 'reaction' videos as well. Cringey and doctored for profit. Never got into them. While I don't agree with 'Emotions aren't meant to be shared' per se, as that can go a toxic route, I don't give a damn about the reaction to begin with.

Like...congrats. Even if it's legit. That's your personal thing, I feel. And then EVERYONE makes a damn reaction video and clogs up the feed. I wish Youtube kept video replies, they were tidier back then I feel. Now everything is a damn reaction or discussion video with one or two originals.

Star Wars theory is one of those channels that preys on people's negativity for views.

A new story about Hidalgo's appology has popped up under the story in the OP's link. He said that he intended it as "sarcastic self-mockery" and did not mean to hurt anyone's feelings.

I don't think that's him, unless he created an alt account. It has the wrong join date for one. His actual twitter account is from April 2014, while this one is 2016, and has been set to private since late last year.

The screencaps of him 'mocking' SWT are from his main account based on the screen caps, but the apology is not his main account, if that's him.

He changed the handle on his main account, which would have allowed him (or someone pretending to be him) to snatch up the old one.

Although, if someone was pretending to be him, why would they apologize lmao. Seems like they'd do something more nefarious. So maybe he did make an alt account that seems more likely.

Just felt like something the character in the show would've said. I don't think there was any malice intended.

I would probably tear up to a degree if I got to see a CGI young William Shatner make a Kirk entrance the way Hamill did in The Mandalorian. I wouldn't be filming it and posting it for clicks. It would be my own private moment.

He certainly thrives on drama, but I wouldn't put him on equal terms with people like Grace Randolph, Nerdrotic, Midnight's Edge or Doomcock. They've long delved into the fake news territory, while SW Theory, despite mostly making crap content, hasn't gone that deep yet. And he's got more subscribers than all these people combined, with 10K new subscriptions every day.

This said, SWT going after Pablo Hidalgo is hardly a surprise to anyone familiar with both these people. Hidalgo was among the most vocal (bordering on obnoxious) advocates of Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi back in the day, and SWT has made his disdain for both pretty public.

If I were Hidalgo, I'd just steer the fuck away from all this.

Yeah, ignoring it seems to be the best bet. SWT loves drama and will continue to foment it to benefit his channel.

Again, he does good content, but I just recall all the kerfuffle over his fan film and I'm just not surprised by any of this.

well anything to drive up views.. Wonder if they get paid? Technically there riding Star Wars/Trek which is IP, and can't be monitized, maybe under "journalism"? .. though watered down that definition has become..

And he'll likely make a bunch of money off of this total non-event too. "The Lucasfilm man said something on a private Twitter account that I didn't like!" And his acolytes will eat it up, filling his coffers ever more.
