Max Payne 3....*Sigh*

Hmm…after reading the newest G.I. mag I’m not so sure about Max Payne 3 anymore kids.

First. As some of you May or may not now is that Remedy games (The Devs that made the first 2 MP games) is not making the 3rd, Rockstar is.
Again some of you may or may not know is that Rockstar is the Dev that makes the GTA games.
Not that I’m not a fan of GTA but it sounds like MP3 might be in the GTA style of gaming.
I don’t know about you but I don’t want GTA5 starring Max Payne.

Second is that Max Payne isn’t Max Payne anymore.
Let me clarify.

Max Mayne now looks like Stone Cold Steve Austin with lots of scars.
Again not that I’m not a fan of Stone Cold but Max Payne is not Stone Cold Steve Austin. Period.
Next is the fact that James Mccaffrey (the original MP voice actor) will not be returning.
Rockstar wants Max to sound older and more ragged so they want a new Voice actor.
I don’t know about you but a good part of what I like about Max Payne is his voice.
I say give James Mccaffrey a chance to sound older and more ragged. After all, the last MP game was in 2003 so he is OLDer you dopes!!

Max has also hit rock bottom Ala Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell) and Ethan Thomas (Condemned 2: Bloodshot) and probable just like countless other Video game Characters.
Sorry guys, been there played that.

Third is the fact the game no longer takes place in New York.
It’s now in Sao Paulo, Brazil. HUH?

Again (IMO) as with Max Payne’s voice part of it being a Max Payne game is the New York setting.

Next is the new game play.
I don’t know about you but Bullet Time (BT) was one of the coolest things about MP.
Rockstar still plans on using BT but a new “updated” version.
The new version contains QTE (quick time events) and a ripped off version of the Gears of War cover system and human shield.
Again, I don’t know about you but I have QTE and as far as the cover system and human shield….it’s already getting old because EVERYONE has to have it in their games now.

I don’t want a re-invention of the wheel; I want Max Payne part 3.

To me it sounds like further destruction of the Max Payne franchise.
Didn’t the movie do enough damage?

*Sigh*
Might just have to pass on this one.

None of these things sound like deal-breakers to me.

Rockstar also made Manhunt--one of the grimmest, grittiest games ever produced for the PS2, and a personal favourite of mine. Its fictional version of Buffalo, New York (Carcer City) made Max Payne's New York seem almost bright and cheerful by comparison.

Second is that Max Payne isn’t Max Payne anymore.
Let me clarify.

Again not that I’m not a fan of Stone Cold but Max Payne is not Stone Cold Steve Austin. Period.
When I saw the new Max, I didn't think of Stone Cold Steve Austin: I thought of Vic Mackey from The Shield--another personal favourite of mine.

Plus, Max's appearance has already changed rather drastically once before, between MP1 and MP2.

Next is the fact that James Mccaffrey (the original MP voice actor) will not be returning.

Okay, I'll grant you--that sucks. But I'm willing to give the new voice actor a chance.

Max has also hit rock bottom Ala Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell) and Ethan Thomas (Condemned 2: Bloodshot) and probable just like countless other Video game Characters.

As opposed to a fresh concept like, say, the hero avenging the murder of his family and his partner?

I think you're being a little selective when it comes to your cliches.

Third is the fact the game no longer takes place in New York.
It’s now in Sao Paulo, Brazil. HUH?

That wasn't the case for me.

Keep in mind that the first two games were developed by people from Finland. To me, their version of New York seemed only a little more authentic than Jackie Chan's from Rumble in the Bronx.

Sao Paolo, by contrast, sounds like a fresh and interesting setting for a crime drama.

Next is the new game play.

My reaction is the opposite.

Bullet time might have been innovative back in 2001, but it's become so familiar now that Yahtzee openly mocked Monolith for using it when he reviewed F.E.A.R. 2.

In fact, Remedy was already changing the way bullet time worked, in an effort to freshen it up, in Max Payne 2.

By contrast, I've played far fewer games with cover and human shield systems than with bullet time.

It doesn't sound to me like they've destroyed anything yet.

It sounds, rather, like they're making a determined effort to strike out in a new and interesting direction (like Valve has with Left 4 Dead 2), instead of just giving us the same old same-old.

They may succeed, or they may not. I for one am going to wait and see.

The whole drunken hobo thing seems to have happened in the last few years. I'm waiting for Halo 4 to feature a broken down and alcoholic Master Chief.

Just checked and this is a Rockstar Vancouver game... so really, there's no idea if this game will be good or not. Bully was good, but that was essentially a GTA game set in a school... so we'll see.

Willing to actually see this before condeming it. I have no problems with anything listed so far. The fact that the character isn't stagnant pleases me.

I hope it's good . . .
I probably won't have the ability to play it when it comes out unless I strike it rich and upgrade my computer etc
I figure I still got MP2 to play until then

backstept - dearest of all your friends

I just read the review in GI today too. I'm thinking it could be pretty good actually. Seems like this game might give us more free explore capability that previous MP games. And if they stole a plot for this game from anywhere, seems more like Man on Fire.

Everything I've read so far about this game, makes be believe it will suck on a monumental scale. From the new cover system, to the story, everything points down.

But at least, we got two superb games out of it.

I'll wait and see on this. I doubt it will be as good as the first two, but you never know.

I wonder what ending after Part 2 they'll go for.
The one where Mona dies or or the secret ending where she lives. Because I'd like to see her back.

I'll wait and play it before condemning it. As long as Max can still kick ass it really doesn't matter how old he's gotten.

I'll wait and see what its like but it does not sound good so far, sort of reminds me of a director taking a classic film and doing a "re-imagining" for the mass market with lots of cgi and the "hollywood brat" cast

The former.

Well, I'm out. This aint Max Payne. Evidence here:

Please tell me that's Uncharted or some new IP. Becuase that is NOT Max Payne. No way, no how. Where's the god damn noir? That's what made the games so awesome. The noir style and storytelling elevated the game to simply amazing heights. This....well, this just looks derivative of games like Uncharted and Resident Evil 5. That's not what we're looking for.

Yep, as I stated before.

They have basically chipped away everything that makes Max Payne, Max Payne.

Like I said before, I don't want to play GTA5 starring Max Payne.

GTA has enough clones, I don't want to play another.

I predict an epic fail and I'll pass.

I was a big fan of MP1&2, and I read that same GI article, and frankly, I came away thinking that the game seems pretty good. I don't recall reading anything that suggested it was going to just be "GTA starring Max Payne"; in fact, they seemed very respectful of the storyline and atmosphere of the original games.

So I'm withholding judgment until they actually release the game. And in the meantime, MP1&2 are both available for download on XBLA, which is pretty cool regardless.

Where's the god damn noir?

Right here:

That is the signature noir look--low-key lighting and dramatic light/dark contrasts. It's even black and white, for christ's sake.

I have to say--I'm a little put off by the bitterly conservative attitudes that some people are expressing in this thread.

Sounds to me like some people don't want a new game at all--just new levels for an old game.

Way to send the industry the right message, guys.

I'm on the fail bandwagon now. The guy DOES look like a wrestler, and I REALLY liked the old voice over guy. Now, I do like the change in venue and the combat could use some tweaks. But I don't think they need to totally start over and ruin a working character...

Ugh. That looks horrendous.

The noir is almost completely gone and that guy looks NOTHING like Max Payne.
