Lila in Dexter Season 1 (MILD SPOILER)

How different would things be if Rita and the kids never existed, and Dexter met Lila in Season 1 instead of Season 2?

(I'm looking for serious responses to this question, not the usual mockery.)

As evidenced by seasons 5-6, the series doesn't work when Dexter is without a normal life conflicting/contrasting with his life as a serial killer. Lila ended up being a plot device (albeit an interesting one), too unstable to be a candidate for a long-term romantic partnership.

I haven't seen S6 yet, but I'm thinking getting rid of Rita was a mistake. They should have done that only in the season finale of the next to last season and then had the final season deal with the fallout for Dexter. He shouldn't just "get over it."

Well, not only did they get rid of Rita, but season five quickly dispatched with the kids, too. They're mentioned a few times in season six, but never seen. The only remaining element of Dexter's "real life" is Harrison, and a magical nanny willing to work long hours without question has essentially eliminated anything having a baby would add to the story.
