Kirk and Ruth

I thought Finnegan could have passed for a twenty four or twenty five year old myself and wouldn't that be the correct age for a man at Starfleet academy? I mean I doubt everyone had to be in their teens surely?

He's a kid.

Pitting that man against Chris Pine in an epic Starfleet Academy flashback would make it difficult for the audience to believe that Finnegan was the upperclassman...

The actor portraying him was 31 at the time and my impression is that, its a very youthful looking 31 to boot. In fact, I have no trouble at all now, or ever have, doubted that this is exactly how the early 20's version of the character appeared. Older than Kirk, please!!!!
Been a while since I've watched the episode. I might be stuck on his hair. Isn't it streaked with a lot of grey?

That might not mean anything. In the 90s I worked with a guy who was around age 25 or so, and his hair was very silverish: either prematurely grey or a natural dirty-platinum sort of color.

I'd offer to re-watch, to check my impression of the actor's age, but it wouldn't help: I would just spend the whole episode staring at Emily Banks.

T'Girl, purely out of curiosity ... I'm interested to know if you've found yourself being swayed at all, by any of these arguments presented, so far? Or do you still hold fast to your original claim and belief regarding Ruth's age?

I'm still holding to Ruth being an older woman and her appearance in the episode was her appearance at the time of she and Kirk's affair. Finnegan might take some explaining, he did say (abouts) "I'm still twenty" so I think that the replica Finnegan was as he looked at twenty.

Charlie Evens was played by a actor older than the character too. IIRC Janice Rand was to of been several years younger than the actress playing her.

...Heck, Vonda McIntyre in her novels makes Rand a teenager who masquerades as somebody of JL Whitney's age in order to escape from civilian misery to Starfleet bliss. But as far as actual TOS goes, I could just as well see Rand being much older, perhaps even older than the actress, and possibly of Kirk's "type" if there's such a thing.

Which was an extremely odd choice, as it pretty much misses the entire point of her role in "Charlie X." She's supposed to be significantly older than the teenage Charlie.

Interesting take, as Grace Lee Whitney was older than Shatner. Even when you add back the year he dropped in the '70s.

As originally conceived (as I understand it), Rand and Kirk were to of had a much different relationship, more of a peer friendship and Rand being a confidant. It would have made sense for Rand to have been about Kirk's age.

That idea didn't last long,
