If you had to pick another SEASON finale to be the SERIES finale...

If TNG had to end on another season besides the 7th, which season finale would've made the best series finale? For the sake of this thread, let's pretend the seasons that ended in cliffhangers had their second-part air in that same season.

The only real answer is "The Best of Both Worlds". All the rest were pretty mundane. Though I don't think the second part of cliffhangers should be included.

Though I don't think the second part of cliffhangers should be included.
In that case the only season finale I would willingly accept is The Neutral Zone.

Series that end on a cliffhanger are an open wound, and obviously it's not gonna be Shades of Gray, so...

If it did end with TBOBW, it'd be the bleakest finale since ALF's, which aired three months earlier...

But that's too bleak, so let's try another tack:

"Redemption" is great because it ends on a downer, but with an easier way to return to the franchise decades later - and with more believability as the issue doesn't directly impact humanity's fate. It also saves us from three seasons of increasingly inane soap opera that, without the context of seasons 1-4, comes across as surprisingly laughable at times.

End the show with BoBW. Riker remains in command of the Enterprise, something he's worked for and waited for over seven years. Picard either dies (my preference) or is forced into medical retirement after his experiences as Locutus. Data becomes XO, Worf Ops/second officer.

The main characters end the show with some lasting character development. Will Paramount do movies without Patrick Stewart? I think they'd give it a shot.

I'll tweak the rules a little, sorry, but if 'All Good Things...' isn't the final episode then 'Ship in a Bottle' would be perfect, the episode ends after Barclay says: "Computer, end program."

The Neutral zone This one would be weird as a series finale, ending while introducing a new antagonist (or actually, re-introducing them, while also introducing a second, much more dangerous enemy even if that only becomes clear in retrospect)
Shades of Gray Ironically, I think this one could work as a series finale. An incredibly lame finale, certainly, but still.
The Best of Both worlds This would be my no#1 pick, too.
Redemption This one might work, but I wouldn't be too thrilled about it . I'd say it'd be #3 for me.
Time's arrow I think this one might work as well. The series' finale finally tells us why Picard and Guinan are such close friends. #2
Descent Nah, this story simply isn't epic and captivating enough for me.
