Well, you know, when TOS aired in my country TV long years ago, I decided that Sulu was my favorite character. You know, maybe because of my sentimental thought back then, as both of us were fellow Asian. But the problem is, I always think that Sulu had so little role in the series. I can even say that he the most background of background character in TOS. as he had little role in every episode that I watched. Well, maybe he wasn't, as the TV in my country didn't air TOS episodes in good manner. They tend to repeat the episodes that had been aired before. So I couldn't even find Chekov during my TOS watch time long time ago.
The point is, as far as I remember, Mr. Sulu dialog was mostly "Aye Sir!" after got ordered by Kirk to bring the Enterprise somewhere. He didn't even complain when he thought that the order sound absurd.
And I had some hope when John Cho came to the movie in 2009. What can be wrong with a comedy actor like Mr. Cho can bring to Sulu character. And he did really gave me some hope with his little comedy act and did fencing against some Romulan in the movie. But later on, in the sequels, he returned to become the glorious background character again, with so little dialog in the movie. Despite he showed us some heroic skill by piloting the Enterprise against the odd.
So I guess Mr. Sulu is a quiet but boring type person. Even a comedy actor like John Cho make his face like a frustrated Japanese man. How can make this character to be interesting and fun to watch? To have a gay love story like Stamet? Or to make his quiet character to be funny? I don't know.
