I want to see those damn turtleneck sweater uniforms from The Cage & WNMHGB!

(Please note that because of circumstances beyond my control, I am just now watching Discovery, and have just started on season 2 today.)

I want to see those damn half-turtleneck sweater uniforms! In fact, I DEMAND IT!!!

Look, I know visual continuity is all shot to hell now. (Well, assuming that the short Treks are cannon, and I have no reason to suspect that they are not.) Because apparently Discovery takes place between "The Cage", and when Kirk was command on the Enterprise in "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

And in "The Cage" everyone was wearing the half turtleneck sweater uniforms, and Spock was already an established crew member. But in "Q&A" short we saw Spock fist come onboard the ship and meet Number One, and he was wearing the "new uniforms" (as Pike called them). But then when Kirk takes command, they are back in those sweater thingies. (And then again there is the matter of the bridge and the interior of the 1701 looking the same in "Q&A" - pre-"The Cage" as it looks in Discovery...where as pre-Discovery in "The Cage" it looks almost exactly like it looked in "WNMHGB", post-Discovery")

And okay, I can squint and ignore that. (Though I wish they had made the ship look just a little bit more TOS-y. I do like the TOS-y touches - like the color scheme, the colorful jelly bean buttons, Spock's scanner in the bridge - something that the Kelvinverse bridge should have, imho - and the funny handles in the turbolifts, etc - I just wish they had gone a little further with it. I don' need a full-on almost-exact reproduction like they have in Enterprise's "In A Mirror, Darkly pt 2"...but just something that had more than a few touches.

And I know that they couldn't have afforded to build a whole new Cage-style bridge for just a short episode. So I can ignore that. Though I think they could have budgeted in a few Cage-style uniform tops, they look pretty cheap as is.

BUT...OKAY...SO....I'll get over that, but all I want is this:

We already have seen several variants on the uniforms worn by different crews on different ships. There are the original Discovery uniforms, and the "new uniforms" Pike and Co. have...and we saw another sort-of variant in "The Trouble With Edward" short (though in reality those are just the very same under uniforms the Discovery crew wears with that black Away Team body armor. Just worn without the armor.) And we even see several types of t-shirts in season 1 - like the ones that Stamets and Culber were wearing when they were brushing their teeth, with those little insignia on them. And in one of the Shorts, there was even a male wearing a skant in the background!

So we know there are uniform variants. (To digress for a second, as bad as they were in execution, I read something once from the designer of the TMP uniforms and he had created multiple variants of the Starfleet uniforms for the crew to choose from. Some casual, so more work-a-day, and some more formal. Honestly, just go back and look. Anyway...I see a similar aesthetic in Discovery.)

So how about this...introduce a Cage-type sweater with a little insignia pin on it...in the background, as yet another uniform variant. Just...once or twice have a crew member wearing one in the mess hall. It doesn't even have to be an exact scree replica. Just something very similar. I don't care. I just want to see that they exist in the Discovery interpretation of Trek. Then I can convince myself that sometimes the crews of ships use them as alternate uniforms. When...I dunno...when it's chilly...or something.

Just, whip one up and throw it on a crew eating a salad in the mess hall or something. As a fan service.

(Speaking of which, those sweater-type uniforms do look comfy. I would actually wear one if someone made them. But I don't see any for sale. Does anybody know if there are any patterns online for making one myself? I don't think I'd use the same material as they used onscreen...which I think is some kind of velour...but something similar. They can't be very hard to make...though that half-turtleneck collar might be beyond my abilities to personally sew.)

Seriously, don't they look kind comfy? If you were chilling out in the ship's rec deck reading a nice book and sitting in front of a nice holographic fire, wouldn't you want to be wearing one of these cozy numbers...?

My suggestion is you should watch The Cage and WNMHGB........failing that there was a similar uniform in the latest Short Trek.

I feel the same way. The uniforms from "The Cage" & "Where No Man Has Gone Before" are my favorite TOS-era uniforms and remain so even today. I really don't care for the more bolder-colored uniforms used mainly in TOS and even less for the new versions of them in DIS.

Visual continuity issues aside, I think what I like about the "TOS pilots" uniforms is that they give Starfleet personnel a unified look while still being informal at the same time.

Just see it as a reboot like I do. The original uniforms would look terribly out of place next to the rebooted TOS ones the Enterprise crew or the variants we see in Short Treks, anyway. They don't belong in the same world.

That said, I'd love them to do a Short Trek in authentic 60's style, with the classic uniforms and sets one day.

Yeah but just seeing someone in the background chilling in the mess hall with a gold or blue half-turtleneck and a little Starfleet pin would be kinda cool.

Something kinda like these:

I became terrible excited when I first saw these photos of Michelle Yeoh wearing a gold turtleneck.... but then I realized that that she wasn't in costume. :brickwall:

DAMN!!! And it's looks so much like the sweater the female crew members wore!!
