I miss Stargate

I couldn't stand the seasons of SG1 after O'Neall left. First, I had a major problem that after eight years of barely saving the planet from destruction because you went out too far and pissed off an ancient power they weren't ready for, they did the exact same thing again. Also Browder was wooden as hell, Vala was over the top and lacked believability and felt shoehorned into the team. From that point on, they just repeated the pattern of "We need to find this ancient artifact or we all die!" they repeated since season 6.

I really enjoyed SG-1, from season one to season ten. It sucks the recession killed the straight-to-DVD market, the last SG-1 movie and the planned Atlantis one (apparently the actors do readings from the script at conventions). Had they come along awhile later it would have been straight to streaming and likely a success.

SG1 had some great humour, but it was also woven with some genuine heartfelt moments and dramatic tension. 'Window of Opportunity' is often rated as the show's best episode, and it's definitely funny, but at the end, when O'Neill talks of his son, it tugs at the heartstrings.

Atlantis was, to me, strongest in season one, which is ironic for a lot of shows. I particularly enjoyed the mid-season two-parter with the storm. Universe was just getting interesting when they pulled it, which is such a shame.

Honestly, when it comes to returning characters in a potential relaunch of the franchise, O'Neil is probably the original cast member I'd be least interested in seeing again.

Well, he was just dialing it in his last couple of seasons.

I recall reading about how the original plan was to end SG-1 with season 8 and then start a new show called Stargate Command, but the network decided to renew SG-1 for another season instead. I wonder how long SGC might have gone on if Sci-Fi had decided to go that route, and how much of the Ori storyline we got in SG-1 would still have happened in SGC instead.

It was more of a bookkeeping/marketing idea than anything else. SG-1 season 9 was exactly what Stargate Command season 1 would’ve been.

Basically the only real reason why SG-1 got a ninth and tenth season is because SyFy wanted the show to have over 200 episodes and break the record for longest run North American sci-fi/fantasy TV show, which had at the time been held by The X-Files and has since been broken by Supernatural. Indeed, this desire becomes pretty damn clear given it was almost immediately after episode 200 aired the cancellation announcement was made.

In the end, it was rather ironic, seasons 5 through 8 were made under the belief that would be their final season and they tried to wrap up as much as they could in those seasons only to get last minute renewals. Then in season 10 they had the story mapped out that it would need at least another season to wrap up and that's when the plug was pulled.

While I enjoyed it, I never understood why Stargate: Continuum was so similar to season 8's "Moebius" two-parter.
Stargate Continuum was basically them doing the Stargate movie they always wanted, full scale Goa'uld attack on Earth. Given the point they'd already developed the storyline up to that point, the only way to pull that off was to do an alternate timeline.

With all the talk about Stargate recently, I decided to finally sit down and watch "Origins."

What an intensely odd little film.

I do have to say, though, I wish they were as enthusiastic about recruiting fan-3D artists as they were for finding fan-owned and -built props and costumes . I'm not sure what kind of time crunch they were under, but I'm pretty sure I could've done better than "Screengrabs from the movie being dragged across the screen in 2D" with what I had on-hand at the time.

I think I watched the first three minisodes of Origins after stumbling upon them through means we're not really supposed to mention around here. Wasn't really impressed at all.

How did SGA get an ending?

The Wraith are still killing Humans for food. Surley the natural conclusion for that show is the Wraith either dead or at peace (finding a different food source).

SG1 was going to end with season 5, 6, 7. The goa'uld were still enslaving humans. Surely the natural conclusion for that show was either the goa'uld dead or at peace (No longer having human slaves).

Sometimes the enemy is still there. I like the Atlantis finale just fine. However the show got worst every season so it's scary to me to think about how bad a season 6 might have been.
