How the Internet is Ruining Star Trek XI

Sec31Mike said:

I am not of the opinion that anyone can just walk in and start making Star Trek, nor can they woo a hot director and expect that quality to automatically transfer to Star Trek.
Harve Bennett and Nick Meyer did.

Wouldn't it have been more exciting to hear, for the first time, at Comic Con, that Quinto would be Spock and Nimoy would appear in the film?

As much as I crave info on Trek XI, seeing Nimoy make that Vulcan salute would have been a hell of a lot more exciting if I hadn't read all the internet rumors.

Is the internet ruining Trek XI for us?

A person could simply declare a personal moritorium on getting Internet info on Trek XI.

That said, I was on vacation when Quinto was announced as Spock, and found out about it almost by accident just scanning a Comic Con article in "The New York Times." It was kind of exciting to find out that way. Still, two of the first things I did when I got back home and on the computer were visit the Trek BBS and Trekmovie.com.

I'll also bet that XI isn't being hyped on the Internet any more than any other high-profile project. Maybe even less in some ways.

No. But it wouldn't surprise me if Abrahms did.

Moreso than it already is? The worst that can happen is that we won't have any new good Trek. The best that can happen is that we will. Sounds like a square deal to me.

^ too bad the percentage of folks that think it'll suck donkey balls are more vocal then the percentage of folks who say it won't suck donkey balls.

This, this notion is part of what has ruined Star Trek. That some how Star Trek is a special club with all its own rules and that there is only one special way you can make it or tell a Star Trek story.

Star Trek isn't a "special club", and others given the chance might even be able to work wonders in its universe given half a chance.

There is no special formula to making good Trek - but for the same special formula that applies to all works of fiction - make it interesting and having a reason to care about the characters involved.

I agree.

Even though I could "sort of" enjoy Nemesis and Insurrection for what they were, I couldn't help but feel that the people making those films (actors, writers, and directors) were the "little kids", trying to play dress-up and make a movie like the adults -- the adults being mainstream Hollywood.

Now, I know there are some people out there who get all snobbish and say things like "why would I want Star Trek films to be like mainstream Hollywood -- Minstream Hollywood sucks". Well that's just not true. There have been many good and intelligent films that come out of mainstream Hollywood. That's more than I can say about that silly kids' stuff that has come from Rick Berman in the past 10 years.

Insurrection and Nemesis are the reasons that people consider Star Trek geeky. It wasn't always that way. Star Trek II and Star Trek IV were mainstream films that were well-liked by the average movie goer -- not just Star Trek fans. It is high time that Star Trek gets a mainstream Hollywood makeover, and is given over to a creative team who can take this franchise from "geeky" to "cool" again.

And some spoilers still have to be seen by choice. I don't think anybody who stays involved with the geek community could shelter themselves so much that they wouldn't hear that Quinto was Spock, but they could certainly choose to not read a script or plot summary if one was leaked. In all my years as a practising fanboy, I've never once read a leaked script for a movie that's not out yet, because I don't go looking for them. Now, I love a few early rumors; as long as the plot (especially the resolution) is intact, it's fine with me.

Almost ALL spoilers have to be seen by choice, at least the important ones.

I agree with your post, and would just like to add that the idea that a person needs to remain 100% spoiler free in order to "truly" enjoy a movie is silly and unrealistic. Knowing the cast, general presentation, the kind of stuff they put on the back of the DVD case, that's not going to make a good movie any worse. But if you can't resist the temptation to read threads with "spoilers!" written all over it, or download a leaked script, or click on every Star Trek news item you see, you deserve what you get.

And heck, sometimes knowing a few tidbits of information about a movie before hand can be kind of FUN, comparing what you were expecting to the final execution. Or even useful, like knowing to stay after credits in a scene. I bet 95% of first-weekend movie-goers didn't see the final scene of XMen3. I did because I read just enough to learn there was something worth watching after the credits. That's a spoiler.

When a CNN headline names the actor who's coming back to Lost, that's sort of unavoidable.

^ CNN has nothing better to do nowadays ;)
Guess that happens when you do news 24/7/365.
Can't allways cover the war, can't allways cover politics, so what are you left with ?

Grr, yeah. And when you get spoiled from magazine headlines in the checkout line at the grocery store, I just wanna THROW THINGS AND SCREAM! Seriously, am I not supposed to buy groceries now?

And I'm just saying, that kind of spoiler should in no way impact a person's enjoyment of a show. That kind of spoiler has been around forever. If simply knowing that an actor or character is going to be on a show completely ruins the experience for you I feel bad. Life must suck for you in general, very few things in life are "spoiler free".

There's a difference between surprise casting and regular casting, i.e. Tom Cruise's cameo in Austin Powers versus, say, who's going to play Captain Kirk. How much of an impact will Michael's final-seconds-of-an-episode cliffhanger return to Lost mean when you know it's coming?

The impact of Jimmy Smits' surprise cameo at the end of an NYPD Blue episode (he was uncredited during the guest star credits) was ruined by ABC promoting the hell out of it.

Also, someone like you is in no position to "feel bad" for others.

They have, and they are.

Oh, is that what they call making Trek? We'll just have to wait and see what kind of Trek they have made.

Someone like me? You mean a person with money and a gigantic wang?

Since you don't know me from Jack I'd kindly advise you to go fornicate yourself.

Can't argue with the timing: the same time I'm already looking in the forum. Let's get this over with.
