Hoshi Sato

James Wright

Commodore
Commodore
in the Enterprise episode "Terra Prime" Hoshi Sato was acting captain for a brief time, if the series had managed to run for seven years do you think Hoshi would've made Captain?

James

Seriously? No.
In fact, I couldn't believe there wasn't a single person of higher rank aboard Enterprise.

Hoshi doesn't really strike me as the captainy type. I think she'd always be content to just let others take the lead and let her play with her languages.

hmmmmmm hot asian with power, yeah, hoshi can be my captain any day

(/selffaceslap - there I did myself so none of you would have to)

Mine too, besides Captain Hoshi Sato sounds good, who knows what might've happened if the series had a full seven years?

James

I think Hoshi did fine as acting captain in Terra Prime. So yes, I do think she could have eventually made captain. Although I must add that it's rather unlikely that we would have seen that in the series itself.

The woman cries at the drop of a hat, right? Because she was about to bawl at the end of Terra Prime. Real Captain material there. :p

Ensign Brah: "Like, Captain, we're totally being attacked by one of those Romulans ships. Totally killin' mah buzz."

And Hoshi precedes to break down and cry.

I'd believe there were folks with higher ranks on the ship, but not on the bridge. And, so, since Hoshi was the highest ranked bridge officer, she got to command the ship.

Or something...

As for Hoshi gettin' to the rank of captain if the series had run for seven years - no way in hell.
Ya can't go from ensign to captain aboard one ship in under a decade (don't let the new movie fool ya, kids!).

It would have been nice for her to have at least gotten to lieutenant, though.

I think Archer left Hoshi in command because he trusted her to carry out his orders. They may have been higher-ranking officers on board, but Archer would have no doubt of Hoshi's loyalty. And, especially after the ordeal she had gone through in Countdown/Zero Hour, he wouldn't have doubted her toughness in the face of pressure.

She probably wouldn't have made captain during the seven-year run of Enterprise, but she should have gotten a promotion to lieutenant, especially after the Xindi mission.

And since Hoshi was a senior officer, she was probably higher up on the chain of command than any junior officers (i.e. anyone not a member of the senior staff, like Hoshi), even if they had a higher rank.

Also, its entirely likely that Hoshi was the highest ranked officer on the ship at the time. While the show was in production it was stated that there were enlistedmen on board. When you consider that plus the fact that the ship only held around 80 something people, that means that officers wouldn't exactly be all over the place.

I don't think she would've made Captain, but Lieutenant probably. (BTW, have we ever seen a Lieutenant J.G. or Lieutenant Commander in the 22nd century? Did these ranks even exist back then?)

Nope, always Ensigns, full LTs, Commanders and Captains.

Speaking of Hoshi and ranks, did either her or Mayweather get promoted in the ten years between "Terra Prime" and "These Are The Voyages"?

I don't think that she would ever want to make captain. She went on that adventure for the chance to be exposed to more languages.

Never saw J.G. on any of the series but all of the series had a Lt Commander rank except Ent.

PErsonaly thought that Reed should have been a Lt commander and Hoshi at least a Lt.

Hard to believe that an Ensign would have been the highest rank on board the Enterprise after Acher, Trip and Malcolm left the ship.

One problem with Ensign is that it is second Lt and an Ensign is automatically promoted to J.G. (1st Lt.) after six months. If nose is kept clean then promotion to Lt is damned near automatic. after that rank has to be earned.

Of course the BEEBS had Rank all screwed up.

Imagine a Major (hayes of the maaco's) under rthe command of a Lt (equal to a Captain) Not in any military I have ever encountered.

I seem to recall that the NX-02 Columbia had a lieutenant at the helm. But for some reason Captain Hernandez referred to the helmsman as ensign when he had lieutenants insignia, or vice versa.

Either way, it was a sad reminder that Archer's command crew all deserved promotions after saving Earth from the Xindi.

Don't forget a certain Asian operations officer who didn't get promoted to Lt JG for like six and a half years.

The show ran for 10 years. Sure 6 years took place invisibly between Terra prime II and These were the Voyages, but not only was Hoshi still an Ensign, but she had plans to return to the same jungle she had left ten years ago to teach languages to the same students who had been sitting on their thumbs waiting for her suspending their educational growth for an entire decade when by this time they should all be teachers themselves.

Cadet to Captain, not Ensign to Captain. Kim is a ruddy rube.

Hoshi's not captain material but she IS Empress material . . . (MirrorVerse)

No. I think she had come a long way confidence wise over the course of the series, but in general she still did not show a strong command presence. I do see her heading up a top academic position someday.
