Hope Hicks, Donald & Melania Trump Contract COVID

If Biden had gotten COVID, the Trump supporters would be dancing in the street without masks, firing their guns in the air and saying things like, "Praise Jesus." It's a vicious cycle that humanity won't evolve past anytime soon. But this is a guy who's caused so much damage with his corruption and incompetence, so can you really blame anyone for celebrating?

That is why some humans are simply better than others.

I'm not a fan of Trump, but I wish him a full recovery. I also hope that he now will see the seriousness of the situation and advise Americans accordingly.

I agree with your first sentence, but I feel the likelihood of your second sentence coming true is roughly on par with the odds of me stripping naked, dousing myself in motor oil, and running up and down the halls of my apartment complex screaming "WALLA WALLA WALLA" until either my lungs give out or one of my neighbors clobbers me with a golf club.

I'm no fan of Trump, despite being a self-confessed member of the religious right. I think his debate performance was disgraceful, and Biden was certainly the more presidential of the two.

But as someone who has been pushed to the limit by 7 months of quarantine, I can tell you that a lot depends on Trump's ability to fight this thing. If he dies, or gets incapacitated long term, the people are going to get spooked, and the quarantine could be vastly extended and intensified. Our kids' education will be compromised (zoom-schooling kids under about 12 doesn't work well, and doing it with kids under 8-9 just doesn't work period). And we'd eventually bankrupt ourselves with all the Unemployment and stimulus checks.

Whether you want Trump to keep at it, or whether you want Biden to inherit a salvageable country, here's hoping that the Donald fights the bug and wins.

I wish the Trumps and Hope Hicks well and hope they have a speedy recovery.

But...

Trump really was kind of asking for it by often scoffing mask-wearing and social distancing. Even Biden isn't entirely out of the woods. Although he's taken recent tests for COVID that have turned out negative, I think the incubation time means that we won't know for sure he didn't catch it at that silly debate for another week or two.

Trump understood that we could not remain shut down indefinitely. He was risking his own safety to avoid showing fear. Hopefully, if he can fight Covid and win, his decision will be vindicated, and people will be more willing to do what we need to do to get the economy going again.

If Covid lays him low, and the lockdown continues and intensifies, then God help us all.

:guffaw:

The economy could’ve started back up much sooner if he had taken the lead on mask wearing and not played on the anti-science crowds fear.

I see you've bought into the neo-conservative philosophy regarding the economy:

1) Tax cuts! (while trotting out the Laffer curve and pretending this will actually get more revenue)
2) Oh no, the budget is in the red! This must be because we're spending too much on the social safety net (and can bear no relation to our prior tax cuts)
3) Gut education / Medicaid / Medicare / Social Security / infrastructure to balance budget
4) Tax cuts!

Restore '90s-era tax brackets and there would be more than enough money for years upon years of stimulus checks. And as for unemployment? Maybe you aren't aware of how the system works, but workers pay into the unemployment program with every single paycheck they receive.

I say we go back to the 90% graduated tax rate of the 1950’s. The tax rate when “America was great”. ;)

You'll get no argument from me.

The book Showdown at Gucci Gulch, by Jeffrey Birnbaum, is a great read about the tax reform act of 1986 and an illustration of just how systematically the Republican party has had wealth disparity as its long-term goal for decades.

The Soviet Union tried socialism. Aside from the 15 million people dead and 250 million people living under third world level conditions, it worked out great.

More seriously, it's the law of economics. People consume. A nation must produce. If people can't produce because they're quarantined, the resources run out. Boosting taxes won't fix that.

"Trickle-down" economics isn't a viable concept, chief. Unless you mean the trickle is that of the top 1 percent doing a few last little squeezes of piss upon the working class.

can you really blame anyone for celebrating?

Yes you can, everyone should, it's disgusting. When it comes to talking about being better than other people while cheering somebody getting sick, I think any rational person is going to see through that.

You're not going to convert me. I'm a 35k/year 99-percenter working stiff, the kind who would benefit greatly from "wealth redistribution". If the possibility of extra money doesn't bring me around, your crack about kool-aid isn't going to either.

My point was that Trump's decision to not wear a mask was perhaps reckless, given his age, but it was calculated.
