Games that you feel were a little overrated and over hyped

OK I finished The Last Of Us part 1

As art it's fantastic, as a game it's an interactive movie, or at least it tries to be.

I honestly can't decide whether I like it or not. It felt drawn out in parts and sometimes the pacing of the story felt like it could have been trimmed down a bit more than it was, and still feel the same. I couldn't muster any sympathy for anyone in this game. The voice acting is great and the motion capture also great but I just couldn't get into this story which felt like it had gone over a lot of familiar tropes in zombie movies and I really felt underwhelmed. I went into the game without expectations but didn't at all feel excited or enthused with it.

I am playing it again but only to get collectibles that I might have missed the first time around, and then after that I shall delete it from my drive and not install it again for a long while.

5/10

Another oldie: New Super Mario Bros. It was smooth, it was polished, it was nothing we hadn't seen several times before. It felt like a watershed moment, Nintendo stopped making huge genre-changing things and started making content

I was underwhelmed by Quake. Sure was a big technical leap forward for first person shooters, being proper 3D and all. But it was really brown and in all other regards very run-of-the-mill. Duke Nukem 3D meanwhile had clever level design packed full of details, and wasn't made entirely of concrete and sludge.

Agreed. I remember being underwhelmed as well when I played Quake for the first time. I was like "wait, THIS is what everyone was raving about? I don't get it".

Yeah, I never really understood Quake's popularity beyond the technical advancements of the time. I never found it much of a fun game, not like Doom anyway. I recently played Hexen II, which uses the Quake engine, and it felt really clunky and awkward today. The whole 'you don't need to press a button' to activate anything leads to some clumsy moments in activating things before you're ready. I also feel that without it, you can have more complex interactions, so I'm glad that behaviour didn't catch on.

Quake was definitely very brown, but I thought it's gameplay was perfectly balanced and timeless. I've been playing fan mods and speedmapping packs (which are still being made) for decades!

Also the recentish update added a fantastic new single player campaign, which looks fantastic compared to the very blocky original.

Tetris
Wolfenstein 3D
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Definitely "The Last of Us". People seem to forget the controversy about the lackluster gameplay and AI when the game was released and look at it through rose-tinted glasses because of the story/characters.

I am gkad at least one person feels the same way. I mean it isn't entirely a bad game but I don't think it deserved all the awards it got.

Death Stranding, i have this across 2 platforms, i even bought the PS5 upgrade in case i was missing something important, but still i have never been able to get that far into it because it is just sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring, and it seems to be nothing more than a walking simulator with stumble mechanics, yet i see nothing but praise for it, but i cannot see why, and the same goes with this guys other game Metal Gear, i remember the worldwide hype for MG3 on the PS3, so i also jumped on it, and again was bored to tears by not only the gameplay, but my god, the cut scenes......the endles boring soul destroying cut scenes. lol

I'm glad this isn't a Metal Gear fandom.....They would rip your comments to shreds... Having said that I tried one of those games myself and yeah it's not my cup of tea. Cutscenes for days lol.......... QTE event ooh fun /s I'm probably not the target audience for them.

The PS4 God Of War games...
Ragnarok isn’t as good as GoW imo. But the biggest issue I have with the GoW games is that figuring out sets and upgrades etc seems overly complicated and not very productive (it’s never felt like an upgrade was an upgrade or that a different set of armor designed to boost x or y and enhance a play style ever did that in any noticeable way).

Maps absolutely suck as hard as they do in most EA Star Wars games and you’re similarly gated (I don’t mind a semi open world but don’t make it so obvious). Also, I’m not a fan of difficulty by bullet sponge level. Boss fights where you just chip away at multiple health bars are boring.

…..

As for TLOU part 1… it’s the stealth imo. The story is great but what separates it is the stealth which is so damn satisfying, especially since stealth is so lacking in most games. Part 2 is even better but I will never like playing as Abby.

As for my number one overhyped game… it has to be the Outer Worlds. As a New Vegas and Obsidian fan I was so excited when the press was beating the spiritual successor to FONV drum and so utterly disappointed when I played it. Granted, I played it early but it was such a disappointment that I’m convinced that 90 percent of the positive reviews were motivated more by trolling Bethesda (peak Bethesda hate was happening) than any love of the game.

It’s been long enough though that I may give it another chance.

For me it was Destiny way back.

Got so hyped by gaming media in the leadup, was a day one adopter and was massively disappointed because i expected this to be the new Halo and it was, at least to me, just another mediocre shooter.

Had one good thing though it did for me - i never believed any of the review and gaming sites ever again when they hyped up something else that turned out to be mediocre at best once actual gamers got their hands on it. Saved me quite a few nerves and money.

The thing that really shits me off with the gaming industry is no matter what, the moment a game is released in a matter of the next day or two it's suddenly got 10/10 golden reviews everywhere, not one flaw mentioned ever, anywhere.... It's almost as if you could buy positive reviews of your product but that would never happen would it? That would be a form of corruption /s

The way Cyberpunk reviews were handled pre release absolutely got me to back off at the last minute. There was an embargo and the reviews felt as packaged as the gameplay videos YouTubers were given to show (they weren’t allowed to show anything else). I had it in my cart ready to purchase but there was so much telling me I was being manipulated that I waited.

Wound up buying it for about 20 dollars when the shit hit the fan but not playing it until later. Worked out well for me but yeah too many big game releases have been filled with BS reviews and too many small and AA studio releases have been overlooked.
