Games that you feel were a little overrated and over hyped

So what games do you feel got way too much hype and felt a little overrated after you had played them?

For me most recently The Last Of Us part 1.......

I am near the end and I'm now at the stage of just wanting to complete it for the sake of completing it. It's just not fun any more and really feels like a big slog.

How exactly did this win so many awards?

My only gripe with Halo 1 was that some of the maps were very repetitive. Oh, and IIRC you only got to use the Scorpion once for a very short time.

They're all good games and all, but they all have their share of flaws. And certainly not worth the overwhelming revere attributed to them. If I was going to make an objective-as-possible top ten video game list, there wouldn't be a Zelda game on it. Yet the way the franchise is treated, you'd think they make up the entire list.

ETA: I maybe put the first BOTW on there, but that's a big maybe. Incidentally, I would be more likely to consider Last of Us, simply because of how it moved the entire industry forward in how it treats the medium as an art form.

OK I liked The Last Of Us but didn't feel like it deserved all those "game of the year" 5 star reviews it got when it came out, having now played it. Would I play it again? Maybe, not sure. It's not a bad game, just I felt it got a lot of hype when it was new and still seems to have a rabid fanbasse that won't dare criticize it.

For me, maybe the original Horizon Zero Dawn. Sure, it's a great game, but as someone who really likes RPGs, I kind of found this one to be a frustrating experience. The inventory was annoying to deal with and filled up way too quickly, even with it upgraded to the max. And then there's the combat. I could never quite come to grips with the combat and found it quite difficult. Plus, I found the game didn't nearly have enough quests for the size of the world. The world was huge, but the quest givers were so spread out.

I really appreciated your comments and I'm a rabid HZD fan. I Just did the renaster and am taking a break from the final main story quest.

I don't mind that the quests are spread out all over the map. This time around I found a lot of datapoints that I never found before. The datapoints add a lot of lore to the world.

I may finish the game before the end of the year or perhaps sometime in the new year.

I guess what I meant to say is that given the size of the world, it really feels rather empty in places, where things could be just a little more populated to keep things interesting. And that's a shame because I felt the side-quests really added to the lore of the world, and it did really feel like they took the extra time to model unique detailed areas. Content wise, it just wasn't all there, which made me wonder if perhaps they ran out of time and money to do more to populate it. The datapoints shouldn't have been the only things out there in those places.

That's fair enough. I do find it odd but I feel the exact opposite way when it comes to Horizon Forbidden West. I find that in that game there is way too much content and the main story feels a lot less compelling to me than the first game.

The second game however looks a lot more beautiful with lovely environments and locations.

I hope the next game in the series will be a bigger improvement on both.

Yeah, I haven't played Forbidden West, and mainly because of my experience with the first game. I'm sure I'll eventually play it. I don't play many first person or third person shooters, so the bow mechanics were a real struggle for me, made even moreso with the countdown timer during the final boss. I also really disliked how flimsy the cover objects were, which gave me a hard time not only during the boss fight, but the first time you have that major battle with the giant thing, I forget its name.

Easy solution...... If the main boss fight is too hard hop into options and lower the difficulty to story. I'll admit that's how I did it every single time. Also use the Focus to highlight weak spots on the deathbringer

Yeah that would have been a lot of fun had we been able to keep that for longer.

I never played any of the Halo sequels, I just lost interest

I did, that was on easy. I knew at one point I'd have to drop it down. Even then, I was having difficulty with the main boss and the countdown timer leered at me. Some of the difficulty in that game can be wildly imbalanced.

And yep, the focus to highlight the weak point is a concept I constantly struggled with in the game.

Don't worry that gets a lot of people..... Keep having a go when you get the time and inclination. It's worth it to complete the first game at least. The story and world of Zero Dawn is really good and sobering once you dig in.

Recent real world events keep making me think of this series.
