Game Show Host Tom Kennedy Dies

He practically wrote the book on game shows. Name That Tune, in particular, was one of my favorites of all time...

It's a bygone era, really. Do they even still HAVE game shows anymore? :sigh:

They started making a comeback the past couple of years as mostly summer primetime programming.

They're relatively inexpensive compared to scripted dramas and easy to produce.

Resurrected/Returning shows:
Match Game (Alec Baldwin/ABC)
$100,000 Pyramid (Michael Strahan/ABC)
Press Your Luck (Elizabeth Banks/ABC)
Card Sharks (Joel McHale/ABC)
To Tell the Truth (Anthony Anderson/ABC)
Celebrity Family Feud (Steve Harvey/ABC)
Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? (Jimmy Kimmel/ABC)
Holey Moley II: The Sequel (Joe Tessitore, Rob Riggle/ABC)
The Wall (Chris Hardwick/NBC)
Weakest Link (Jane Lynch/NBC)

New shows:
Ultimate Tag (JJ Watt, TJ Watt, Derek Watt/FOX)
Titan Games (Dwayne Johnson/NBC)
Game On! (Keegan-Michael Key/CBS)
Don't (Adam Scott, Ryan Reynolds {Producer}/ABC)
Ellen's Game of Games (Ellen Degeneres/NBC)

I tend to find there are 3 different categories of game shows.

1. There are those who are on all the time and don't seem to be going away for the foreseeable future, ie Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Price is Right.

2. Then there are nostalgic revivals, such as Let's Make a Deal, Hollywood Squares, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Supermarket Sweep, that go off the air for some time and then find themselves getting revivals at some point in the future. And speaking of Let's Make a Deal, I used to like watching the reruns from the 70's/80's run, but I find the new one with Wayne Brady to be hard to watch.

3. Then there are the vanity projects, like Ellen receiving her own gameshow.

Yep. I like Celebrity Family Feud and Let's Make a Deal. Also love Jeopardy and like America Says (the latter is via the Game Show Network).

Makes one wonder...how many of the "game shows" that exist today, exist for the actual game, rather than simply excuses for their celebrity hosts?

I mean, come on. Alec Baldwin?
