Future Of Titan

I feel it necessary to state the obvious....

The Destiny Trilogy as I've heard about it, is NOT three Titan novels. They are three novels that will have Titan in them. Kinda like how Q&A wasn't a Titan novel but Titan appeared in it.

^ Not quite the same. Q & A was a TNG novel with a Titan cameo (also a New Frontier cameo and a Gorkon cameo).

Destiny will be a crossover trilogy that will include many different elements of Trek. :)

^ It's nice to see that the mere mention of my name on a book project keeps everyone on their toes.... ;)

True enough, my point being though that they aren't Titan novels in the same manner that Taking Wing, Red King, Orion's Hounds, and Sword of Damocles are. :)

FYI Marco's said after the coplexities of doing the Mission Gamma covers, he wasn't likely to do it again, particulalrly because of getting folks as 'models' for the non-on-screen characters.

although, granted, this is less an issue with the likes of Hulian, Chaka, Ree and Torvig for example...

So does that mean we probably won't be seeing any live action versions of Vale, Keru or Ra-Hareii (if he's still around at the end of SoD).

^^No, I think it just means there isn't likely to be a single massive photomontage cover representing the ensemble. It's still quite possible that they could show up individually on future covers, whether painted or photographed.

I hope they stick with the photographed covers like they did for the first three. I don't have a problem with painted covers, I like quite a few of the SCE and other ebook covers, but I do prefer photos when they are possible.

One could commission a photorealistic artist like Travis Charest to simply draw/paint the crew shot. I'd hang such an image on my wall.

Are you talking about the Titan books? The picture of Deanna on the Orion's Hounds cover is painted, and I would assume the picture of Ree is as well. It's hard to tell with the Melora image. As for the others, I don't have big poster-size prints of those like I do for OH, so I can't tell. But a lot of the recent covers that many people assume are photographed are actually realistic paintings.

"Simply"? If it was so simple, Pocket would do it. I assume a photorealistic artist might charge a lot of money, or be so busy they're hard to book up to meet a short deadline. And he still needs to find all the models or photographic references. It might be simpler/cheaper to employ all the actors/models, put them in makeup and photograph them!

It's not as if there is a shortage of established cover artists who have worked for Pocket, and some of those would probably be capable of doing photorealism is they were asked, or if they were crazy enough to try to do one for such a quick-turnaround deadline (that may well require changes after it's gone through the CBS Consumer Products approvals process).

I'm sure "simple" it's not.

(And I say that as a former editor of a professional journal, and an amateur artist.)

Like I said, Pocket already uses artists whose paintings are realistic enough to pass for photos, at least on the small scale of a paperback cover. I could've sworn that Picard on the cover of The Buried Age was a photo until I learned it was a painting.

hey, it's just an idea. These guys do commissions so it stands to reason they can do covers. As Mr. Bennett said, we already have photorealistic painters working on the covers. I'm betting there's an editorial design aspect that no one has considered.

Those are painted? I could have sworn those were photos (as for Ree, I figured he was one of the big lizards whose name I cannot remember). Are Tuvok and Akaar painted on the cover of [iRed King?

Indeed? Fooled me too!

I think what causes the confusion is that most of the TITAN covers are based upon well-known pictures but made appear as drawings.

That picture of Deanna looks like the original but then painted over digitally to make it appear she's been drawn. Yes, that works. I've done that before with photoshop. Looks closely ... you'll see that she's painted with thicker brushes than Melora or the doctor. That doesn't make sense when you paint one big cover. Looks to me that the picture wasn't big enough so when enlarging it, the artist had to brush over the unsharp edges.

I personally find it easy to make a montage of all those elements on the TITAN-covers and then rescale things to make the cover look better. If I had to draw it with colour, only a few corrections are possible.
