Can you watch the Star Trek films without watching the tv series to understand whats going on during the films?

Another question, do the films continue from one another? Sequels?

What's your favorite Star Trek film? I just had to ask.

Yes.

Star Trek II, III and IV form a trilogy of sorts. Star Trek II being a direct sequel of the Star Trek episode Space Seed. The rest of the films are pretty much stand alone. Though it is good to be up to date on the Borg before watching First Contact.

Depends on the day of the week. :guffaw:

Although two of the films (Wrath of Khan and First Contact) are sequels to episodes you don't need to have seen them first. You're given all the info you need in the movies.

Films 2,3 and 4 (Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock and The Voyage Home) are a continuing story. The rest are all pretty much stand alone. You'll miss out on a few little refernces, but nothing major. If you go and watch the right episode you'll probably go "That's what they meant!".

I didn't see the films in order when I first saw them as a kid on video. It took years for me to fill in the gaps. It was cool to finally see film 4 and finally understand how everyone was in the situation they were in film 5 after having first seen what happened in film 3.

If you liked STXI, you'll probably enjoy First Contact the most. Lots of action.

EDIT: Pretty much what BillJ said.

To add to what the others have said, IF you wanted to, you could check out "Space Seed" from the Original Series before watching Star Trek II, and "The Best of Both Worlds" from The Next Generation before watching Star Trek First Contact. But as was noted above, in no way do you need to watch them to enjoy or understand the films.

I personally like Trek VI the most just because it focuses on politics and drama more than the others.

If you don't see The Search For Spock first then certain sections of The Undiscovered Country don't make sense. There are references to the circumstances of David Marcus's death that punch a fair sized plot hole in TUC and leaves the viewer wondering what people are talking about.

^He says "I've never trusted Klingons, and I never will. I've never been able to forgive them for the death of my boy". That spells it out pretty clearly, IMO.

I think this should been in the 'Movies I-X' forum. Despite the fact that they are sequels to episodes, I think "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek: First Contact" are two of the most accessible ones for people who aren't that familar with Star Trek and haven't seen too many episodes of any series.

I believe "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" is the most accessible of all, because it's funny and sweet, whether you know the characters and their histories well or not. There are some lines at the beginning and end referencing the previous movie, but not knowing what they were about didn't confuse me or negatively affect my first viewing experience. When I first saw it, I had not seen a single episode of "Star Trek" or the previous two movies, yet I loved it immediately. The ones I've mentioned are my three favourite Star Trek movies and I like "Star Trek: First Contact" most.

I discovered Star Trek through the movies.

As has been said, II-IV form a trilogy. VI is an epilogue to the trilogy. So, really, the original movies have a non-consecutive tetralogy -- or "quadrilogy" like they call the Alien series.

Yes. I was never a big fan of the old 60s show and found the films to be quite enjoyable. For me it was two totally different franchises. And of course the last movie was a reboot so it's not even neccessary to watch the old films unless you want to be in on some minor details.

That's a tough one for me. I can always list my favorites but giving them an order is hard. Here it goes...

1.) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
2.) Star Trek First Contact
3.) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
4.) Star Trek (2009)

My favorite of all the T.V Series was DS9 followed by Next Generation.

Sounds almost exactly like my lists, and I too couldn't find an order for them necessary.

I guess The Final Frontier is tenuously a continuation of The Voyage Home. Early on, Scotty bemoans Kirk's antecedent "let's see what she's got" comment reference the abilities of the new Enterprise with a "well we found out, didn't we" quip! This leads me to believe the events of STV followed soon afer IV.

The Motion Picture is still the best movie.
