Different ship designs???

spockrocks

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Greetings,

I would like to see some hand sketches (NOT COMPUTER RENDERINGS) of ship designs that any of you have done. Anyone have any???

Thanks!
Spockrocks

Check the link in my sig theres some pencil drawn ships in the subfolders :)

I only have two sketches posted anywhere, most of the time I do my doodling on paper, then have it sitting next to me when I start making the model. I cant draw very well, which is painfully obvious from these pictures, so I rarely scan them. I have A4 pads full of tiny scribbles and larger bits, but nothing I'd post anywhere.

Do a search for Inkscape. It has most of the features of Illustrator, and it's free.

Spockrocks, awesome thread you've started! And welcome to the board.:)
As far as tools, any improptu sketchpad, your favorite pen/pencil, a decent flatbed scanner, a cheapo wacom (bamboo, etc.) and any decent piece of software (I use an ancient copy of photoshop I bought years ago, Gimp is nice, I guess it depends whether you are more
comfortable working with Raster or Vector "engines"....). I tend more towards the raster pixel editors, anything that features Layers....
Here's some stuff I dug up, crude WIP's in various states of abandonment...:) Some older, some newer, some recently inspired...
As I said, CRUDE...I like seeing rough scribbly napkin sketches and embryonic ideas...

There are stories and reasonings behind this batch of uploaded muck...odd bits of fantasy and drunkedness on my part, mostly. :)
Main thing is to share art and ideas, thoughts and musings (which I don't do enough)...
Looking forward to seeing your projects.

@The Axeman

you do far better than i ever will, my artistic talent is virtually nil and i've pretty much bannished myself to the legos of ship building. some are nice but others are more or less just connected squares and rectangles. what ever i have drawn has nowhere near the detail you've put into the pics you posted.

so don't beat yourself up over it.

Judexavier, guessing those viper ideas came from crossing the fighter from Buck Rogers with a viper? Which is ironic considering the fighters used on Buck Rogers are the rejected designs from original BSG. Very cool.

@ Judexavier, the second and third drawings instantly reminded me of one of the old designs from the Star Trek Chronology book I read years ago, the Marshal class I think. Deliberate, or just coincidence? Yours is clearly superior, by the way. Nice work on all of the drawings.

Dude, that USS Manero (Catalina?) is awesome, as is the DeltaLuna. Why do you draw so many things I want to build? :D

In mid 1994 I was doing some video game concepts for Star Trek licensor Playmates Interactive Entertainment, one of which was a space combat game set during the Earth-Romulan War. Here's one of the spaceships I sketched for the pitch:

This baby was partly inspired by the Greg Jein model of a prospective Romulan cruiser from the wars, small pix of which appeared in the Star Trek Chronology. I took the basic layout of Jein's ship (as much as I could make out from the crappy pix of it then available) and made a much smaller, sleeker craft in a similar shape, with two side by side seats. Note the underslung tail-fin: an inverted nod to the original TOS Romulan ship. The "eyes" are like the window ports on a Gemini space capsule, or a Space: 1999 Eagle. The swept forward "wings" were to give the ship the feeling that the nacelles were so powerful they were pulling it.

Nice Romulan design there it needs to be added to Shipschematics.net i think :) :techman:

That is the coolest one of those I've ever seen. I actually see a lot of influences in this design, but my very first impulse when the image initially opened was a really slicked up version of Sternbach's Marshall-class from the SFC. Mostly the aft end. Rick's original had a very "Corellian Corvette" look to it's bow which you seem to have discarded.

Sweet stuff there.

That's wierd, damn browser lost my password after, like, a year? Almost couldn't remember it.

Sojourner, yes on the Vipers...I've always loved that Buck Rogers ship, and, I was inspired by this site:
http://www.13th-tribe.net/ , figured I'd try to play with something Not Trek for a change:)
Thing is, all those little sketches will probably be discarded, and the final will look totally different.

Axeman, yes, exactly, that ended up being my retake of Sternbach's old Patton-Marshall class from the old
SFC. I always liked the designs in that book, sort of a shame it's now non-canon.

Ricky, sorry about that:) Anyway, that Catalina thing was inspired by something Publisher wrote a while back,
"...aircfraft-inspired....". So here it's the old PBY flying boat. One thing I wanted to do was to bring back that "impossibly fragile" future-tech look that the original E had, here with the tiny neck, and pylons projecting from that thin top spine...
And I know that abstract weird looking box-deck shuttle area is crap...I'll figure out something. And NOT rip off the old Metaluna nacelles.

Maurice, that Rommie fighter is great. For some reason I'm imagining all sorts of "missles" and ordinance slung under the wings.

Albertese, thanks. That thing actually started out (far differently) as my (attempted)-own-universe idea. To be honest, the main inspiration (straight rip-off?) was Mario Andretti's 1969 Indy car :) As it evolved/devolved, it reminded me too much of Rick's Patton, so, back into the Trek world it went. Then of course I had to "StarWarz" it up with greeblie stuff and dirt.

:vulcan: *insanely jealous of your talent*
I really like the Catalina and the Viper concepts. I had tried a while back to do a reimagined version of the Starfighter (similar to the way they reimagined the Viper as the Mk II for the new BSG), but failed miserably. A lot of your details, like the blended body sections, were basically what I was trying to accomplish.

I remember seeing this concept several years ago! I didn't know that it was yours. Nice!

Not your fault or your browser's. TrekBBS just moved to a new server.

Judexavier - Ah! another fellow PBY fan! Not sure what it is about a flying boat from WW2, it just looks "kewl".
