BTTF 30th anniversary with the animated series!!

I liked the first season, but the second wasn't so good -- more kid-focused, less time travel.

I always found it odd that they got Christopher Lloyd for the host segments but had Dan Castellaneta play Doc Brown in the animated segments. I guess Lloyd would've cost more to use the whole time. But they did have Tom Wilson and Mary Steenburgen reprising their roles, so why not Lloyd too?

And hey, I hadn't realized that Jules, Doc's older son, was played by a young Josh Keaton, star of The Spectacular Spider-Man and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Although I definitely remembered that Marty was played by David Kaufman, aka the DC Animated Universe's Jimmy Olsen, Freakazoid!'s alter ego Dexter Douglas, and the title character of Danny Phantom. (Incidentally, both actors have played the Human Torch in video games.)

I think I saw an episode or two when I was a kid but that was it. I always thought it was strange that Fox and Lloyd didn't reprise their roles even though they both got their start in television (and Fox later returned to it).

at the time, as a kid, i was huge into the Back to the Future series, and i was so bummed out Part III was going to be it. I was so happy when this show was first announced, because to me, at that time, this was the continuation of the movies to me. This show will always hold a special place in my nostalgic heart. I watched this every saturday morning, along with Garfield and Friends, and TMNT.

I have long wondered why Christopher Lloyd did not voice Doc. I remember first hearing about in a report in Starlog that both him and MJF would be voicing their characters. Than a later one said they had not recorded yet but the chance was still open for them to do so.

Michael J Fox not doing it is not that surprising. He was at height of his celebrity. Either it was he wanted to much money or was too busy filming movies. Or both.

Christopher Lloyd is baffling though. Most of all because he was in shows live action footage. Also because he had already done voice work in animation before this. For sure as the villain Merlock in the theatrically released Ducktales movie.

My only guess is that it was decided it would be jarring to have only have Lloyd voice Doc and another actor voice Marty.... But that does not make sense because they did But they did have Tom Wilson and Mary Steenburgen.

I am very happy this is finally getting released. I was 13 when the 1 season aired and saw and taped most of those. But for some reason never saw the 2nd one at all. I think my local CBS station changed its time slot. At that age I had no real way of knowing the show was coming back at all. Looking at the air schedule online. The last episode of season 1 aired in December of 1991 and it was not until September of 1992 that new episodes aired.

I have read that there is a 2nd season episode were Doc gets hit on the head and thinks he a superhero. Being in the past Mary picks an alias like in the movies. He says his name is Jimmy Olsen. Which is amazing because later David Kaufman really did voice Jimmy Olsen!

Ah when CBS cartoons were good

He has a distinct voice that you instantly recognize.

I liked Dan Castellaneta as Doc and I am still a major, rabid BTTF fan... but that animated series I thought was pretty terrible at the time. I think I gave up halfway through the first season. The Jules and Verne characters were like Jar Jar Binks to me. Couldn't stand it. The VHS tape I still have from recording the first season is labeled, "Only for the rainiest of days." Maybe there are some good ones I should rewatch? There was some stupid shit about dinosaurs for sure. Plus I wanted them to go to 2015 so badly... it seems like they only went to the future once and it was 10,000 years in the future or something dumb. I felt the entire series was a wasted opportunity. Seems like I recall another adventure in ancient Rome and then Chicago during the Al Capone era? Of course, everywhere they went there was a Biff-Tannen style character.

There were alot of good stories. "Witchcraft" had Marty get put on trial for being a witch during the Salem witch trials. "Go Fly a Kite" Verne thinks Ben Franklin is his father, and cause electricity to never be discovered. "Batter Up" Marty goes back to help his ancestor PeeWee Mcfly win a baseball game. "Retired" is my favorite episode of the entire run, where Doc thinks he has to retire from science or he'll use up the rest of his brain.

The 30th anniversary Blu-ray with the animated series was released today and I got it. I've only seen bits of the animated series and I've never seen the three movies back to back. Looking forward to both.

There's also a comic book coming out tomorrow, the same day Marty McFly arrives in 2015 in Back to the Future Part II.

I miss Saturday morning cartoons on broadcast TV.

I wish they had left the "To be continued..." at the end of the first movie as this is now a trilogy.

I also just found out about the short called Doc Brown Saves the World! which to my surprise was included in the set. Can't wait to see what that's about.

I know, but I still wish they had left it.

I don't, because including it on the VHS created the misconception that it was meant as a trilogy in the first place, and misconceptions should not be perpetuated. I mean, as well as it works as a trilogy, it's still clear that the second and third films aren't quite of a piece with the original. Claudia Wells and Crispin Glover are replaced by other actors, and a new arc about Marty's reaction to being called chicken is suddenly introduced when there was no trace of it in the first film. The original was not made with the sequels in mind, and it should be understood on those terms.

Besides, everyone knows it's a trilogy now. It's not like people who buy the trilogy box set are going to need an onscreen notice to inform them that the story's going to be continued. That was needed at the time of the VHS release to promote the upcoming sequels, and it was needed at the end of Part II to inform audiences that Part III would be out in only six months; but now, so far after the fact, such announcements are unnecessary. So the films should be presented as they were in their original releases.

It just looks better when you see that "To be continued..." especially when there's a "To be concluded..." in Part II. It's nice to see movies in their original format but I don't mind minor tweaks like that to reflect a new reality. On the same note, it might have been nice if they took out the "Coming Summer 1990" tag at the end of Part II.

Just a minor preference.

Going a bit further, maybe they could have edited the end of the first movie to include the Part II intro with Elizabeth Shue, but with another tweak... Marty could have reacted to her new appearance which would have been explained by Doc Brown as a slight change in DNA. Too much? I don't want to turn into George Lucas or overthink it. The "To be continued..." thing would have sufficed.

Yeah all too much for me.
I don't think they should change this, but I would like to say an "alternate" cut of 1 where at the end when Doc is celebrating in 1955 it includes the very end of 2 when another Marty arrives to say he's back from the future. It would just be a such a big WTF :)

As for the 'Coming Summer 1990' thing at the end of pt.3 trailer at the end of pt.2... at a screening of 2 I went to on Wednesday that got a big... I don't wanna say "laugh" from everyone, as we weren't laughing at it or at how "old" it is, but more of a big smile/chuckle from everyone in the room at the retroness I guess.

I don't think that would work. The reason the scene at the end of Part II works is because it takes the scene we already know from the end of Part I and subverts our expectations of it. What you're talking about is tantamount to starting a joke with the punch line.
