Behind The Scenes Gossip

The Caretaker

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I've read in several places that Kate Mulgrew was particularly difficult to work with, increasingly so towards the end of Voyager. Is there any truth to this? Apparently her behaviour and attitude is one of the reasons why Robert Beltran was so outspoken against the show.

And I've always wondered about why Jennifer Lien was written out. Was it simply that the producers didn't know what to do with her anymore, or that she had a drug problem as has been reported elsewhere? I hope that wasn't the case. I have to say I always preferred Kes to Seven of Nine.

Apparently Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran had some kind of personal falling out during the show. There is some speculation of an affair gone sour but no one really knows for sure.

The drug problem was never proven to be anything more than a rumor. They needed to make room for Seven's character so someone had to go. It was originally going to be Harry Kim but after Garett Wang turned up on some People magazine poll of handsome actors they decided on Jennifer Lien instead.

I somehow missed that speculation until now; very interesting, though! That would explain some things. Was she married at the time?

And watching the show again on Spike lately, I have discovered a new appreciation for Harry's looks. I never disliked him; but I am starting to find him kinda sexy, like he's not just a boy anymore. I'm getting time to look at all the stuff he did; he was a very useful guy.

I don't think she can have been that difficult or there would have been much more gossip about it. She was friendly with some of the cast, like Bob Picardo, so she can't have been difficult to like.

No. Shortly afterwards though she got back to together with her future husband.

Apparently Mulgrew has maintained close ties with most of the Voyager cast as well as friendships with other Trek actors like John DeLancie.

Re: Mulgrew and Beltran
Could you imagine the fun the press would've had back then if those two were publicly an item? All sorts of puns about a first officer's duties and such. Must've been difficult to have a relationship with the hours they put in on the set.

Re: Mulgrew and DeLancie
I've read they were friends from before Voyager, and happy to have the chance to work together on the show.

Thanks. Does this mean she and Robert Beltran are still friendly?

At Creation Convention- Sacramento 2003 Kate talked about all her castmembers.

About Robert Beltran she said:
"Robert Beltran? Yes. Sexy. Yes. Unbelievably good looking? Yes. Terribly difficult to sit in that proximity for seven years? Oh yes, yes, yes!
But best of all, so good. One of eleven children. Downs`Syndrom brother. He works passionately on his brother`s behalf. Wonderful son. Wonderful brother. Wonderful guy, and a fabulous actor."

I think this could be an answer to your question.

Kate and Robert seem to have a proper love hate relationship, there are rumours and quotes which would say they are no longer friends but then i've seen posts on other boards which states (from someone who seems to know friends of Robert and Kate) that they are very close friends. Was this supposed fling whilst Kate was with Winrich Kolbe the Voyager director, or was this relationship a cover for her and Robert to keep the press at bay?

In an interview for a net radio station Wang all but said Mulgrew Bullied Jeri Ryan from the first day the women joined the cast and made everyones life a misery and this is why Jeri Ryan has put distance between herself and trek, I do not see why Wang would lie about something like that.

It is said that that Kate hated the fact they had to bring in the character of Seven to try and boost ratings etc. It seems to me she would have had issues with whoever took that role and I think it was may have been made worse by the fact that Jeri seemed not to interact that much with the cast outside of work - I think it was RDM who said she kept herself to herself.

^^Agreed. I really think this is all it ever was. Blown up out of proportion by speculation and the Hollywood need for publicity - bad or good.

^ Not to mention how the public loves the idea that two women can't be professionals about working together. People much prefer them to be bitchy - more entertainment value that way.

It was amusing to read an interview with Katee Sackhoff where she was asked about how her and Tricia Helfter "don't get along". Her response was something along the lines of "I'm meeting her for a beer after this which I wouldn't be doing if we didn't get along." That pretty much shut up the bitchfest speculation for Battlestar. :D

Not to mention that they all, and Mulgrew most of all, were angry about how Jennifer Lien was treated.

didn't Jeri Ryan's husband start getting really pervy around the last season?
He was perverted long before that; it's the reason she left him. He wanted her to go to sex clubs with him; she said she knew their relationship was basically over at that point.

They were both living here; he's an erstwhile politician. The marriage was over before she went to Hollywood. His story only came out later on during his campaign -- and after Voyager was off the air, IIRC. She fought to keep the records closed, for their son's sake. But it did come out, and basically sank Ryan's career.

Normally, I'm not much of a celebrity hound; but this was all in the Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune and hard to miss.

^ Dangit, why did you post that link? I ended up wasting like 20 minutes reading the whole transcription of her convention appearance! I would love to see Mulgrew at a convention!

Man back in the day Red77, bod and the other Janeway gals would be all over this thread. Haha good times.

Interest revelations all round so far. I think as far as behind the camera gossip goes, VOY was a fairly tame show, especially when you compare it Grey's Anatomy and the like. I think most of the actors got along, especially Picardo, McNeil and Russ.

The famous VOY blooper reel is one of the few times you can see the cast sort of being "themselves" on set. It's good footage.
