Australian Heatwave

It was meant to get to 29 today here in Brisbane but we've had showers off and on it feels slightly cooler then that.

Had a "controlled blackout" here for an hour or two amidst 40+ temperatures yesterday, that was fun.

Yeah well we can thank John Howard for those. He set up NEMICO which chooses where the power goes and the likes of John Olsen and Jeff Kennett who privatised the Electricity assets. If more money can be made selling S.A power to Victoria (no much how we need it) it will go east of the boarder.

Olsen blames labor for the debt from the State Bank but that bastard when to the state election saying he wouldn't privatise ETSA. The bastard squeaks back then does a back door privatisation via 199 year lease (after forced from office for misleading parliament gets a plumb government appointment as the state's Agent General living a life of luxury in New York).

Course none of that makes it on crap like Today Tonight when it blames the government.

Anyone posting from Melbourne tonight? The news in my neck of the woods is that there is "power chaos", with major blackouts.

The temperature has thankfully dropped tonight, the ocean breeze is cool. Very humid, though.

I'm in Glen Waverley and they shut the power down during the afternoon. Since then its been ok. From what I understand the areas around Bentleigh, Rowville and some northern suburbs are affected.

I work sometimes in the San Fernando Valey in Los Angeles, and it gets above 110, 115 117 degrees Fahrenheit, regularly in the summer months here. That's 43C to more than 47C. Same is true of the San Gabriel Valley here.

Malvern appears to be unaffected. But this heat is making it impossible to get sleep. Ugh. Over it.

Bring on Winter dammit!!!!!

I have read a report that says that there were 24 heat related deaths in Adelaide yesterday and that there were another 6 in the three hours up to 11am today.

I don't know if there have been any deaths in Victoria.

And there will probably be more to come that friday is going to be the earliest before the temprature drops.

6:27am CST was the lowest temprature that Adelaide has recorded in the past 72 - 86 hours when it dropped to 27.5. Nights of +30 and even +35 temps are not pleasant.

Our average Jan rainfall is 20mm and we've record 1mm.

A friend of mine down in Tazzie was telling me it's pretty hot.

Drought definitely would suck, but during our summers that's not a heatwave so much as an expected average tempature.

Where do you live that the expected average temperature is between 40 and 45C?

Last night, because of the blackout, almost every trainline was suspended. I caught a tram home (there were plenty of them for some reason). We live right next to a station and not one train went by for about an hour (when it's normally peak and they're passing every 5 minutes).
We must have had a blackout during the day because all the clocks were flashing, but we didn't have any more of them.
Today it's cooler (only 30 so far) but much more humid, so in a way it's worse!
It's just been a hell week... heat, trains up the creek, that horrible story of the little girl an the West Gate... it's not a good year so far, let's hope it improves. Everyone's just very tired and over it basically. And we're still in the low 30's for the rest of the week at the moment as well.

It seeems that northern Tasmania is suffering higher temperatures than Hobart is. On Flinders Island the temperature reached 41.5C - the highest temperature ever recored in Tasmania. At Fingal the temperature reached 40.6C and in Launceston the temperature reached 37.5C which was their hottest day since WW2. High temperatures should continue Friday and Saturday.

In isn't common for temperatures in Tasmania to be more than 30C for more than two days in a row.

Flinders Island only kept their record for a day. At 3pm yesterday Scamander, on Tasmania's east coast, recorded 42.2C, while Ross recorded 41.6.

Hobart's temperature, on the other hand, only reached 31.1C yesterday and we had a pleasant sea breeze with it. Today it was cooler, it is currently just after 6pm and only 18C.

I might live in mild SE Queensland but the power outages I can relate to. I recently spent a month in the Solomon Islands staying at a family friend's house and we had to put up with power outages during the hottest part of the day. When I was in the house I don't recall it hitting about 36 but the humidity was the main threat and coming from Brisbane I struggled to cope with it. We also had water outages that went from mid-morning to late afternoon/evening. At one point we lost water for 48 hours and had was really tough. I was drinking enough water for three to four men when I was there, it was crazy.

I know it's bad form to bump an old threat while South Australian and Victoria are cooling down, parts of New South Wales on Sunday are forecast to be "the hottest place on the planet" with a day time temp of 47 degrees C.

It's going to be an absolute bitch of a day and I'm glad I'm not going to be there.

The decision comes as NSW prepares to become the hottest place in the world on Sunday, with temperatures expected to soar to 47C.
Not even the plains of Africa or the deserts of the Middle East will be as hot.
Ambulance officers took four elderly people to hospital for heat-related illnesses today in Sydney as temperatures hit the high 30s in the city's west.
NSW Health spokesman Dr Jeremy McAnulty said there had already been double the usual number of people treated for heat-related illnesses in January, with 80 people being admitted to emergency departments.

well those temps he mentioned for australia back then, are nothing compared to the temps hitting australia this weekend.

It's getting hotter

And victoria cooling down is incorrect, we're getting the 47 forecast as well

Okay hadn't heard that (obviously that Victoria is only slightly more worth in ch10 news promos that S.A).

The for the capitals - Melbourne like Adelaide will hit a high in the 40s before dropping off as the cool change comes through - down to mid 20s for Sunday.
