Australian Heatwave

It's tragic. Worst fires in the state of Victoria in recorded history. Whole towns destroyed
I think it is too early to say if these fires are worse that the 1939 Victorian Fires in which 71 people died.

I'm afraid it's likely alot worse, just based on the sheer number of homes destroyed this time around. And as you noted above, the toll is now 65 and still rising.

Now at 76. And they are virtually guaranteed to find more.

I was watching the news tonight and I had to turn it off as it was quite upsetting.

Sadly, the toll is the worst in Australian history, overtaking the 1983 Ash Wednesday toll of 75 (in those fires the death toll was spread over Victoria and South Australia). I hoped earlier in the day that the toll wouldn't overtake that record, it is so distressing to see that it has.

And it looks like that it will rise higher possibly to around the 100 mark - at least according to one report I heard.

A tragic day of Victoria and for all of Australia.

As far as the floods are concerned - it looks like two men have drowned, and the a little boy was taken by a crocodile while trying to retrieve his dog from a flooded creek.

According to The Age :
Helen Stamkovski, whose husband owns the St Andrews Hotel, said while the central township was okay, everything north and east had been devastated.

My ex-gf's family are located to the east of the pub. I really hope they got out ok.

All the animals from Healesville Zoo have had to be evacuated and taken to Melbourne and Werribee Zoos.

I'm sure many of us have fond memories of Healseville Sanctuary - a very nice day out. I've also trekked through Toolangi state forest, through the old-growth forest there (I did a 2nd year Melb. Uni thesis for biology there based on the two prominent tree-fern genera in that area, Cyathea & Dicksonia), and driven the Black Forest many times - both beautiful locations nearby the township of Healseville.

Death toll is up to 84 now and still rising.

For those who remember, the newsreader Brian Naylor and his wife have been named among the dead.

He had a couple of different shows, and was the newsreader on HSV7 in the 70s and Chennel Nine Melbourne in the 80s.

Death toll at 84, expected to pass 100. Damn. What a bad, bad day.

Such distressing news. I remember Brian Naylor very well.

I found this photo on Flickr and it really touched my heart

I can't believe about Brian Naylor. That will really bring it home for everyone.

Yeah I heard about that earlier when they said they had grave fears for his safety after finding his wife's body.

Brian was for many years the face of news on GTV9 in Victoria. The Nine-Network jingle "Brian told me" is something we all remember. It's a sad day for the Naylor family and for the people at GTV9 in general. At least his daughter and her immediate family (who lived opposite Brian in Kinglake) escaped.

Tasmanians would be buggered if they had to cope with a heatwave in the 40s as most homes down here don't have airconditioning.

We had temperatures in the 40s last week, and a string of days in the high 30s. Thursday last week, a 70 year temperature record was shattered. A day later, the previous day's record is shattered. How is that not a heatwave?

Just because it's always cold in Hobart, doesn't mean the whole state freezes ;)

Before last week Hobart held the record for the highest temperature (40.8C).

Tasmania occasionally gets temperatures in the 40s but it usually is only for one or two days so it cannot really be described as a heatwave. I think that there has only been a handful of times when temperatures have been over 35C for three days in a row.

Besides when I posted that comment (Jan 28 - 11 days ago) Northern Tasmania had not had three days of high temperatures yet so up to then I was right with what I said (if I remember correctly the hot days where from 28-30 January).

Also over the entire year average temperatures in Hobart are warmer than those in Launceston.

My condolences to everyone in Australia. It appears the death toll will break 100 now.
You are dealing with an epic disaster and I wish you strength.

The death toll now stands at 93 (or 96 if you believe CNN). It's horrible, and my wife's aunty is right in the middle of it, and haven't heard from her in 24 hours. We're all hoping she's ok. She was evacuated once and was allowed to go back, but now it appears the fires are out of control in that area.

A former Channel Nine newsreader Brian somebody and his wife are dead.

What a terrible summer for you guys. That's some hellacious heat and I know heat (living in humid, hot South Florida.) Yours may be dry heat, but doesn't matter, it's damned HOT.

Reading about the fires is like reading about the L.A./San Diego ones a while back, except your death toll is much higher. And to hear that some of the fires may have been deliberately set is just ghastly.

Best of luck guys. Hope the temps drop soon.

It seems that the death toll is now at 108. Police have said it will rise further.

I think it is about time we give very stiff sentences to anyone convicted of setting bushfires.

108 people are now confirmed dead in Victorias worst ever fire. Horrible, simply horrible.

Every single state,a s well as the ACT and the Northern Territory, have sent or will send firefighters to Victoria.

New Zealand has offered the services of 100 firefighters should they be needed.

The British Prime Minister has offered to provide any assistance that the Australian Government wanted.

I think we need to send them anyway. You guys need them more than we do at the moment.

Yesterday the entire country had yellow skies - all the smoke from Australia drifted over to New Zealand.
