Any Fellow Stargate Fans Here?

whacks

I'm a huge Star Trek fan, but my absolute favorite show ever to exist is the Stargate franchise. From the original 1994 film to SG-1, Atlantis, and even Universe, there's something about the blend of military sci-fi and mythology that really resonates with me.

I'm curious—how many of you are into Stargate as well? How do you think it compares to Star Trek in terms of storytelling and character development?

Stargate is one of my favorite franchises, and rivals Star Trek for character development. Daniel is among one of my favorite fictional characters, and one who has a great challenges to overcome.

It also has a great movie.

I'm not a stargate fan but I've watched the movies and TV shows. Still, it's sad that they've all been cancelled somehow, that a lot of projects have been announced for 15 years and all of them have been cancelled and that Amazon hasn't developed a TV series based on this series, or if it has been developed, it hasn't been announced yet, or at least it hasn't been leaked to the press who will be in charge.

I don't think it's really been "canelled" so much as they just haven't done anything with it in a while.
I'm a big fan of the franchise, it's one of my favorites, after Trek and Wars. It did have some great characters.

I'm a fan, though I never did see Unvierse and am not tempted to do so.

I don't know whether I'm a 'big' fan.

The first film (director's cut and original) and SG1 are amazing. SG1 lost a bit in the last few seasons but was still great tv. I never really got into Atlantis, but I heard it got better after a while. I might give that a shot as soon as it's back on Amazon in the Netherlands. They rotate the shows a bit.
Never tried Universe.

IDK that Atlantis was ever bad, but it did improve over time as most series do.

OTOH, I don't think it went on long enough that it started to decline as many long-running series do in their later years.

I did feel Atlantis kind of wrapped up quickly and unsatisfactorily (though not as annoyingly as Voyager's "Endgame"), but my understanding is that that wasn't by choice.

All Stargate TV shows have been canceled in some way over time. Stargate SG-1 was later collected with 2 DVD movies. Atlantis was going to do the same, but after the decline in DVD sales in the 2010s and the bankruptcy of MGM, the script was completed and then cancelled 'a few months' before the start of filming. Syfy also wanted to approve a 3rd season for the Universal TV Show. But when MGM called to talk about this, no one answered the phone.

I really enjoyed Stargate and all its spinoffs, including Universe. Generally just a fun series not trying to make any larger points. Was a nice counterpoint to ST in that sense. I wish they'd make some more but alas it's probably done for good.

I don't know if I can say a I'm a huge Stargate fan as the only series I've watched in its entirety is Stargate Universe. Then again, only a true Stargate fan would actually stick with Universe until the end so I guess I must be one.

I'm joking, Universe was actually fine, especially once it had put the edginess of its awkward first season behind it. It's a real shame it ended on a cliffhanger as it left the whole Stargate franchise feel unfinished.

I don't reallly agree that the series never tried to make any larger points, but I'll agree it was less prone to trying to offer social commentary.

I don't know about that. I think it did make larger points and was a much closer spiritual successor to TOS than TNG was.

Perhaps I'm just forgetting that stuff after all machine gun fire and blowing stuff up! But, no, it was definitely meant to be more for fun. No so much issue oriented, but that doesn't mean there wasn't any. And that's fine. I enjoyed it for what it was.

There are spin-off comic sequels, but apparently the original team weren't involved so they might not be "canonical".

There are mutually contradictory novels and comics that take place after the end of the TV shows, but none of them are likely to be taken into account by any future productions.

The outline (such as it was) for Atlantis season six has been discussed by producer Joe Mallozzi. The opening two-parter, called "Now What?" in the outline, was adapted into the script for the unmade Atlantis direct-to-DVD movie, "Extinction," and there's been a bit more revealed about that. Not as much has come out about the third SG-1 movie, "Revolution," but we know it would've had the Stargate program going public, and also dealt with O'Neill and Carter's personal relationship.

There was also a little revealed about the legacy sequel series whose pilot had been written before stalling out due to the pandemic and Amazon buying MGM. Brad Wright tweeted some clues and talked about it a bit more on his podcast. Like "Extinction," it would've opened with Atlantis on the moon (apparently in no rush to leave), and he also hinted that O'Neill and Carter had been in a relationship, but were on the outs at the moment.

I miss Stargate, along with the discussion threads that were done here in the BBS back in the day. It was one of my favorite shows (both SG-1 and Atlantis) and for several years, I've been hoping for a revival, but that seems to have stalled.

That being said, I still have all ten seasons and the two DVD movies of SG-1, so revisiting the show is not a problem when I have the urge.
