Alternate TNG?

^ I really enjoyed that book, but I think there was something unnerving about it. Normally I adore au's but there's something threatening about Q Squared that I don't normally feel in aus. I think it had something to do with Jack Crusher being alive and Riker being tortured.

^ I don't remember! It's so long since I read it. I'm so old these days I can't remember a damn thing about anything...

Have you ever seen "Parallels"? While not quite as crazy as some of the things you're suggesting, you do at least get to see the captain, first officer, and a few other positions shift around.

I remember thinking at the time it would have been cool to see a universe with Tasha Yar as captain. It seemed pretty straightforward, the evil ink blob kills Riker instead of her, she's promoted to first officer, and takes over as captain after Picard is assimilated.

Now that would be interesting.

It's OK, WillsBabe. I suffer from Halfheimer's myself -- the curious condition of only remembering half of what you're supposed to! I kind of remember the end of Q Squared that Middyseafort referred to, and I agree that the revelation about Jack Crusher was unnerving. -- RR

Indeed.

Now for the OP, I'll bite. And I apologize already in case I've inadvertantly nicked anyone else's ideas.

Captain Alynna Nechayev - Formidable personality with a background in Starfleet security and intelligence, Nechayev has a chip on her shoulder the size of the ship. Though the ship's mission is one of exploration, she was selected primarily for her command ability, not exploratory knowledge, and relies heavily on her senior officers for scientific knowledge. Nechayev would be assimilated by the Borg at Wolf 359 and ultimately sacrifice herself to destroy the Borg ship.

Commander Edward Jellico
(First Officer) - Generally softspoken but forceful first officer who has sublimated his tempers with his love of exploration and adventure. Command is his destiny, but he's content where he is for the moment, until his trial by fire at Wolf 359 during which time he is given command (with Commander Elizabeth Shelby his new XO).

Lt. Commander K'Ehleyr (Counselor/First Contact Specialist) Raised by her human mother among humans, and a member of Starfleet, K'Ehleyr is being groomed as one of the Federation's premier diplomats. She also serves as ship's counselor, much to her chagrin. She will occasionally butt ridges with her onetime lover, Klingon Commander Worf of the IKF. She will miscarry their son (posthumously named Alexander) and this will cause a rift between the two that is likely never to be resolved, as Worf is to die in the Klingon Civil War.

Dr. V'sal
(Chief Medical Officer) Generally jovial but somewhat cantankerous Bolian chief medical officer, and friend of Captain Nechayev. Known for proclaiming his inability to perform miracles. He and K'Ehleyr appear to hate each other with a passion, and appearances in this case may not be deceiving.

Lt. Commander Lore
(Chief Engeineer) Found disassembled instead of his missing brother Data, the slightly schizophrenic android with emotions has managed to hide his somewhat more sinister tendencies from Starfleet and rise to the rank of Chief Engineer of the Enterprise. After his more maniacal tendencies are exposed, Lore would appear to betray the Federation to the Borg at Wolf 359, only to reveal that this was the part of a larger Starfleet Intelligence plan, and later, that he is in love with Yar.

Lt. Natasha Yar (Science/Ops) Eager to escape the chaos of her world, Yar stowed away aboard a transport ship and sought peace in the logical ways of the planet Vulcan, subscribing herself to the ways of Surak and dedicating herself to the pursuit of scientific truth. She may be the only human to ever achieve the Kohlinar. In many ways, she is a walking enigma. Though she has largely mastered science, religious truth largely escapes her, something which occasionally haunts her. Lore is constantly trying to get her to explore her humanity and her emotions.

Lt. Thomas Riker (Conn) Transporter twin of famed Starfleet hero Captain William Riker (who is to perish aboard the Melbourne at the battle of Wolf 359) left stranded on a forgotten outpost for around ten years, Thomas feels constantly kept in his brother's shadow. This, combined with his isolation of ten years, has kept him relatively far down on the promotions list.

Lt. Miles O'Brien (Security/Tactical) A former NCO who earned his commission via battlefield achievements in the Cardassian Wars. Surly and somewhat standoffish, Miles is critical of what he perceives as undue achievement. He is destined to marry civilian botanist Keiko Ishikawa and settle down.

^ That's all really interesting and inventive. I like your ideas, I think a lot of work has gone into all that. I don't think I'd watch your show, though, because it's largely populated by "hard" characters who I either dislike or haven't much sympathy for.

Thanks! You wouldn't watch? But Thomas is there even if he's not quite Will! ;)

Actually, the reasons you specified were actually my reasons for picking who I picked... the 'evil twins' of the fleet more or less. Even V'Sal is kinda Mot's evil twin.

Thinking more over it now (and even moments after I finished writing the post) I think I would have made the Captain Silva LaForge to balance everyone out a bit more. (Plus I really liked Madge Sinclair :() It might also be interesting to have her husband/Geordi's father, Edward, aboard in a support role. We've never had a married Captain, let alone one who commands her husband!

If Silva was the captain, I wouldn't let her die with the Borg, I'd follow the Picard/Locutus route, or, alternatively, let Lore be the one assimilated. That'd be really weird! Then Jellico could still be a hardass and she could be the wise mother figure, and we never see Shelby.

It might also be interesting to flip Riker to tactical and have O'Brien as the conn, or eliminate O'Brien entirely and just have the conn-of-the-week that most of TNG did. I'd like to use another obscure/bizarro character but I can't think of one. Any suggestions?

Here's a revised version:

Captain Silva LaForge - Decorated Starfleet captain and father of Starfleet engineer Geordi LaForge. She is an explorer at heart, unendingy curious, and she began her career as a flight control officer on a deep space mission. She is joined aboard ship by her husband, exobilogist Dr. Edward LaForge, although he is not a bridge officer. This is their first assignment together, and their marriage had been largely estranged prior to this due to trauma over the loss of their young son Geordi in a fire years ago. A consummate professional, Silva is determined to keep her private life where it belongs, and her first duty is command of the Enterprise.

Commander Edward Jellico
(First Officer) - Stern and authoritarian Starfleet officer who cut his teeth matching wits against the Cardassians during the Federation-Cardassian Wars. Jellico is largely a by the book officer, and is determined that things be done the way he (and his CO) see fit. His temper largely balances out Captain LaForge's ever-calm exterior. Jellico would likely be a captain by now himself if his legendary temper had not gotten him in trouble more often than he cares to admit.

After his more maniacal tendencies are exposed, Lore would appear to betray the Federation to the Borg at Wolf 359 and be assimilated by the Borg as their mouthpiece, only to reveal that this was the part of a larger Starfleet Intelligence plan, and later, that he is in love with Yar.

This, combined with his isolation of ten years, has kept him relatively far down on the promotions list.

Having the holodecks working properly.
And I know I'm plagurizing O'Brien in DS9 by saying so!

I love Tom Riker - probably more than Will, actually. So, I'd probably give it a try. I like the Silvia La Forge idea. I'm glad you weren't offended by my saying I wouldn't watch it, didn't mean it to dis your ideas, which are great! :)

No worries, I don't offend very easily. ;)

It would have been interesting on the real show if they had done what they had considered and killed off Will and bumped everyone up and left Thomas aboard. Or better yet left Will alive and left Thomas aboard and just made Frakes do double duty.

I quite prefer the Silva LaForge idea now too. Madge Sinclair was such a tremendous actress, she really could have carried a show if they had cast it this way. And imagine Ben Vereen aboard too. They'd have to contrive a way for him to dance - maybe it's a hidden pastime for him like for Dr. Crusher.

I still wish I could think up a good 'bizarro' con officer.

Hey, Praetor, your "evil/twisted twin" version is interesting, esp. having Lore a member of the crew. Although Data is one of my favorite TNG characters, it might've been interesting if he was more like Lore -- a bit dastardly and mischievious. -- RR

Thanks, Red Ranger! Regarding Lore, I thought so, too. And Brent Spiner might have had more fun playing Lore.

Captain Reg Barclay!

Too nervous to make a decision. Perfect for high-anxiety command situations.

That would be scary!

OK, I have another entry in my twisted TNG universe. One big change: instead of the Federation and Klingons being allies, they're allied with the Romulans and the Klingons remain their chief adversaries, as some fans wanted it. As a result, the old treaty prohibiting the use of cloaking devices has been scrapped, so this Enterprise has a cloak! Also, the alliance with the Romulans is relatively new, only 20 years old, so we see Romulans serving on Federation ships, and vice versa, in a new officers exchange program.

With that in mind, here we go again:

Captain Kyle Riker, Commanding Officer. In this reality, Kyle Riker joined Starfleet Academy instead of becoming a civilian tactical expert. This decision helped alter the course of his family’s life -- on a mission earlier in his career, he commanded an away team that uncovered lost medical technology from a long-dead civilization. The knowledge he and his team unearth helps doctors find a cure for his ailing wife, Betty. As a result, he and his son, Will Riker, had a less strained relationship, to the point that he helps his son plan for and accept his first command, the starship Aries, based on Kyle’s gentle persuasion. He is also a contemporary and rival of Jean-Luc Picard, beating him out for command of the Enterprise, while Picard gets command of the Galaxy-class ship, the Odyssey, which is destroyed years later by a Jem’Hadar fighter. Also, as a result of his happier personality, Riker serves as an early mentor to Data, his first officer.

Commander Data, First Officer. Data falls under the wing of the garrulous Kyle Riker, who challenges Data to be more human. As Riker mentored Data earlier than his previous commanders, he exceeds his original programming and desires to emulate his “professor of the humanities” with greater success than the Data we know. As a result, Riker gave him the choice of being either second or first officer, and with some gentle cajoling, Data takes the bridge command test and makes full commander and first officer. One other quirk of this Data is he is fond of bad puns.

Lt. Cmdr. Kathryn Janeway, Operations Officer & Second Officer. As a rapidly rising star in the sciences, Janeway decided it was time for a challenge, and put in for a transfer to operations. On the recommendation of Owen Paris, Kyle Riker accepts the shrewd Janeway as his operations manager. He sees captain potential in her, as well.

Dr. Kathryn Pulaski, Chief Medical Officer. As an old friend of both Kyle and Betty, Pulaski asks for the chance to serve on one of the most advanced sick bays in Starfleet. A prickly curmudgeon, she most often argues with Commander Data and Lt. Cmdr. Janeway on matters of starship operations.

Lt. Cmdr. T’Rul, Chief Engineering Officer. An expert in warp-field mechanics and cloaking device physics, T’Rul is also the first Romulan to attend Starfleet Academy. A bit prickly and not one to make friends easily, she nevertheless forms a close friendship with Tuvok, as his Vulcan equanimity is a balm to her quick temper and fierce pride. She also has an irrational hatred of Klingons, who she blames for a sneak attack on a Romulan outpost that killed her parents, and also led to the rapprochement with the Federation.

Lt. Tasha Yar, Ship’s Counselor. As a survivor of a failed Federation colony, Yar was impressed with the Federation counselor who helped her integrate back into normal society. Although originally training for the security track, she decides instead to become a Starfleet ship’s counselor, with the additional training as a first contact expert. Her intuition and caution serve Kyle Riker well.

Lt. Tuvok, Chief Security Officer. Similar to his background in VOY and as a friend of Janeway, he decides to apply for the post of security chief on Enterprise. He is considered an expert in Klingon combat tactics, a skill which makes him ideal for the post as Enterprise deals with an increasingly aggressive and resurgent Klingon Empire.

Lt. Chakotay, Helm Officer. Later, Chakotay will join the Maquis, but at this point, he’s an idealistic young Starfleet officer, intent on impressing his new, highly regarded captain.

Betty Riker, The Captain’s Wife and liaison to the civilian population of Enterprise. Betty is the stabilizing influence in Kyle Riker’s life, and it’s why despite his hard-edged style of command, he has some soft edges. She is also the voice of the civilian contingent on the ship, something Kyle isn’t used to dealing with as a career Starfleet officer. It causes some friction but they are often good-natured about these conflicts.

Captain Worf, Commanding Officer, IKV Kahless. Like they originally wanted to do with TOS and did with DSN, Worf would be a recurring adversary for Captain Kyle Riker. From an influential family in the Klingon Empire, Captain Worf is in command of the Klingon Imperial Flagship, the Kahless. He and Captain Riker butt heads often as they’re assigned to similar patrol corridors.
Since Picard gets command of another ship, he requests Troi, Dr. Crusher, and LaForge to serve on his ship, the Odyssey. He originally wanted Riker as his x.o., but has to settle on another officer because Riker takes command of the Aries.

Red Ranger

That's pretty awesome. I always liked the actor that played Kyle Riker and feel he would have been a good lead if the character was softened up as you've done. (Was Mrs. Riker really named Betty?) First Officer Data with bad puns seems like a nice combination of Spock and Data with shades of the 'Xon' character from Phase II.

Imagining TNG-era Janeway, Chakotay, and Tuvok is a really cool mental picture. I can just see Kathy in sciences blue (since they needn't worry about her skin color clashing with it like Data) sitting at ops reporting with Chakotay at the pilot station next to her. I bet they'd flirt during slow periods. I also can't help but remember Tim Russ from 'Spaceballs' and imagine him scanning for enemy vessels here only to reply 'We ain't found shit.' :rommie:

I also particularly like the idea of T'Rul aboard. I always liked her, and the idea of her being reverse-Worf is great. She should be romantically interested in young Chakotay, since Martha Hackett also played Seska. :p

And Counselor Yar is a good chuckle too.
