Alternate TNG?

Whoa! There are some universes I really wish you guys would come over to the fanfic forum and write stories with!

I was just thinking the very same thing! I'd love to read some fanfic based on these scenarios. I like to write some, but I doubt that will happen. I still have an au story, the scenario posted by Amok Time, years ago that I'd like to put on paper.

As the MU Spock once said, "I shall consider it!" I tend to write my own stories with my own characters, though, that have nothing to do with ST. My own fictional universe is about a kind of intergalactic federation whose eventual goal is to forestall the destruction of the universe via entropy! -- RR

Captain Worf

First Officer: Tasha Yar

Second officer: Barclay

Cheif Medical Officer: Picard

Medical assistant/Head nurse: Geordi La Forge

Ships Consellor: Guinan

Chief of security: Deanna Troi

Bartender: Data

Helmsman: Riker

Chief Engineer: Beverley Crusher

Hey^ Anika Hanson. In an alternate universe, there's no reason why the real Annika Hanson (Seven Of Nine) couldn't be an ensign on the USS Enterprise. It could happen...

I think Worf as Chief Medical Officer would be really interesting. We never really did get to see enough Klingon medicine, but we do know obviously it exists.

According to Martok in DS9, 'Klingons make for great warriors, but terrible doctors!' ;)

Well, there was this Klingon doctor in ENT's "Affliction"/"Divergence". According to him, medicine had no very high priority in Klingon society (or at least among Klingon leaders).

Those were also two of the few Trek episodes (others were ENT's "Judgment" and DS9's "Rules of Engagement") which showed that not all Klingons are warriors and not all Klingons want to be warriors. It's just so that the ruling class (and starship crews) of the Klingon Empire consists of warriors.

Okay, I'll play.

The crew of the Starship Enterprise, NCC-1701-7 (nicknamed the Enterprise-7)

Captain William Ryker, commanding officer -- Promoted to captain of the Hood when Captain Desoto was killed-in-action on Altar IV. He is a young, ambitious officer who sacrificed a relationship with Deanna Troi in order to become a starship captain, the most prestigious position in all of Starfleet. Now he finds himself in command of the newest Enterprise, a Galaxy-Class starship with civilian scientist and families on board. When he discovers that Troi will be assigned to the ship as his First Contact Specialist, he begins to wonder if there is a chance that he can have both a life as a starship commander and as a husband.

Commander Elizabeth Shelby, executive officer --Shelby, aka "First," is as ambitious as Ryker. She one day hopes to get command of her own vessel, but it's been a hard road to get where she is at. Shelby also happens to be a single mother. Her husband, Jack Crusher, was a Starfleet officer who died in a skirmish along the Klingon border when hostilities briefly flared up. She harbors resentment towards Klingons for the death of her husband despite there having been years of peace. Her daughter, Leslie Shelby Crusher, is a normal teenage girl trying to wrap her head around living aboard a starship for the next several years. In fact, she isn't thrilled at all.

Lt. Commander Deanna Troi
, First Contact Specialist -- Deanna Troi is part-Betazed, her father being a Starfleet officer who was stationed on her homeworld of Betazed. The women of Betazed are skilled telepaths, while the men have no telepathic skills whatsoever. Her mother is one of the high matriarchs of the planet, thus making Troi something of royalty. She has an aristocratic demeanor but it's undercut by a mischievous strike and curiosity about other beings. She wants to touch as many alien minds as she can for the sake of the experience. That's what's brought her into Starfleet. She once had a relationship with Captain Ryker, but he gave her up for his career.

Dr. Jean-Luc Picard, Head of the Civilian Scientific Contingent -- Jean-Luc was once a promising Starfleet officer. It was said that he'd make Admiral before he was forty. That all stopped when he lost the Stargazer during a fatal first contact with the Ferengi. After his court martial, Jean-Luc left Starfleet to pursue a Ph.D. in archeology. Not wanting to give up space exploration, he signed up on the Enterprise-7. Ryker considers Jean-Luc his confidant, often using the good doctor as a sounding board. What Ryker doesn't know is that Jean-Luc has a mission of his own, one that comes directly from Starfleet Command and the Daystrom Institute of Archeology.

Dr. Kate Pulaski, Chief Medical Officer -- pretty much the same as we saw in season two of TNG. Except that she butts heads with Ryker instead of Picard.

Lt. Macha Hernandez
, security/tactical officer --26-year-old woman of unspecified Latin descent who serves as the starship's security chief. She is described as having a new quality of conditioned-body-beauty, a fire in her eyes and muscularly well developed and very female body, but keeping in mind that much of her strength comes from attitude. Macha has an almost obsessive devotion to protecting the ship and its crew and treats Captain Ryker and First as if they were saints. (pretty much as written in the early TNG bible)

Klingon Lt. Worf -- An exchange officer from the Federation's newest allies -- the Klingons. He has no patience for humans or their "soft" ways, but finds them interesting. Quickly develops a respect and kinship with Macha Hernandez. However, Commander Shelby does not trust him at all and often comes toe-to-toe with him. Well, toe-to-tippy-toes.

Lt. Data, operations manager -- his backstory would be what it was in the March 1987 writer's guide/bible rather than what we got in the series. The only exception is that Data has never been promoted because Starfleet Command doesn't trust that an andriod can raise to command.

Lt. Geordi LaForge, conn -- same as the first season.

Lt. Commander Miles O'Brien, chief engineer -- pretty much the same as the series character but an officer and the chief engineer.

And a character or type of character that I wanted to see in TNG:

Samara Upenda, Captain's Representative for the Civilian Population -- Samara often finds herself in conflict with Ryker when it comes to the needs of the civilian population. She acts as his voice with them, but often finds it hard to do so because she sees her job as being more the voice of the civilians. Her duties include making sure that during alert situations that the civilians -- husbands, wives, children, etc. -- go to their emergency shelters. She also sees to shipboard community activities and the establishment of "town squares" throughout the ship. She also liaises with the ship's civilian city council.

That's great, middyseafort. Really well thought out. I particularly like the civilian liasion, and the idea of the town squares. :)

I notice that a lot of people have Riker giving up his relationship with Troi to persue his career. Has anyone had Deanna abandon her relationship for her career?

Thanks! I have to admit I got the idea of town squares from Ed Whitefire's Enterprise-D blueprints that were never published. There are points marked as "town squares" throughout the corridors.

Oh, and I have to thank CBL's excellent novel The Buried Age for the idea of Picard as a civilian scientist.

Guess my male mind automatically thought of Riker giving up the relationship. How damn cliche of me! ;) But that's a better idea and makes for better conflict with Riker if Deanna gave up the relationship for her career.

Well, there is one fanfic idea I might pursue. I call it The Three Captains, an homage to The Three Tenors, kind of. It involves a team-up of three Enterprise captains from different quantum realities (a la Parallels), and they have to solve a crisis that could destroy the universe. I haven't decided whether it should take place in the TOS or TNG era. -- RR

Just to make it an alternate reality:
Capt. Picard - Captain of the Enterprise; same as TNG; did have a family, but they left and he never remarried.
Cdr Riker - Riker commanded the Enterprise at the Borg Incident after Wolf 359; he was promoted to captain and given command of his own ship.
Commander Shelby - first officer for season 4, 5; she learns to temper her ambitions and her impulsiveness and earns the trust and respect of the crew, making her a better officer and better command candidate
Counselor Troi (Brandy Ledford) - the rare blonde Betazoid is an accomplished psychologist, and very intelligent. Her sister Kestra, is an accomplished engineer, like her father, and her mother babies Deanna and Kestra, often commenting that Deanna could do more like her older sister. All Betazoids have Blue or Green eyes, rarely purple.
Dr. Crusher (Catherine Segal) - Crusher is a widower who brought her daughter, Leslie A Crusher, with her onto the Enterprise D.
Data - Operations Officer, Second Officer, an android lifeform, Data is second officer until Riker and Shelby leave, when he assumes the first officer position for Seasons 6 and 7.
Lt. Cdr Worf - Operations Officer of Enterprise after Data is promoted. Originally a tactical officer, but is placed into a command track after his actions in Best of Both Worlds. He resumes his tactical position after Hernandez moves to the Titan.
Lt. Cdr. Geordi La Forge - Engineering officer who is promoted to Chief after Season 1
Lt. Macha Hernandez, security/tactical officer --26-year-old woman of unspecified Latin descent, blonde haired, who serves as the starship's security chief. She has the physique of a fitness model, but is very curvy and feminine-appearing. She has a fire in her eyes and much of her strength comes from attitude. Macha has an almost obsessive devotion to protecting the ship and its crew and treats Captain Picard and First Officer as if they were saints. Becomes Chief Security in Season 2; moves to Titan with Riker, where Worf takes tactical.
Lt. Tasha Yar, Chief of Security - as written in TNG, grooms Hernandez into a competent officer to take over after she dies in the season 1 cliffhanger.
Lt. Cdr. Miles O'Brien - assistant Chief Engineer, commissioned officer. He does not desire the command responsibilities of Chief. Worked Conn in 2364 for his bridge duty requirement.
Leslie Crusher - a young female who displays a high degree of intelligence, but does not like starship life. She looks at Picard as a father figure. She becomes an acting ensign in Season 3 when her actions rescue the ship from a temporal recursion loop. She moves off to the Academy in Season 4.

Riker's Ship (Star Trek: Titan, 1st spin-off; DS9 is 2nd)
Captain Riker - based on his heroic actions during the Borg Incident, Riker is given his choice of command, which he takes after a few months for a ship to be commissioned for him.
Commander Mark Talbot - Titan's first officer is an ideal officer, and very efficient in his duties. He and Riker are close friends, and it hurts when he is killed in 2368.
Commander Shelby (after leaving the Enterprise) - First Officer, Shelby is now more seasoned, and more experienced as a first officer under Captain Picard's tutelage. She and Riker have a mutual respect for each other.
Counselor Staadi - Older sister to the (future) Helm officer on Voyager, she is full Betazoid and a calm presence that Riker looks to for advice.
Lt. Sela Yar (Ellen Pompeo) - Operations officer, second officer; after the Enterprise repairs a temporal fissure involving the Enteprise C, an alternate Tasha Yar goes back in time and has a half-Romulan Child. This child and mother are rescued by a Klingon vessel, and smuggled back to the Federation. Tasha is killed in the escape attempt, but her daughter is raised on Earth with her cousins. She is half-Romulan, and embraces her human half.
Dr. Pulaski - same as from TNG, CMO
Lt. Macha Hernandez - Chief of Security
Lt. Cdr. Miles O'Brien - Chief Engineer from the Enterprise, until transfer to DS9 in TNG's 6th Season.
Lt. Cdr. Kestra Troi - Asst. Chief Engineer, Deanna's sister is a very competent and capable officer, very popular, and very attractive. She is the model older sibling and officer who seems perfect to the observer. Will sees a very capable engineer in her, who works well with Miles. She becomes Chief Engineer once O'Brien moves to DS9.

I forgot - Lal is built and goes onto the Titan with Riker and his crew once she graduates Starfleet Academy.

For Troi - how about Michelle Ryan?

Captain Kestra Troi (Betazoid/Human female)
The captain of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 {Epsilon} [1], she uses her Betazoid capabilities to help her in diplomatic conferences. The Enterprise is her first command. Since childhood she has been facinated by the unknown. Her hobbies include theatre and going on roleplay adventures (in the holodeck, and the 24th Century version of 'Tabletop' games)

Commander Data, First Officer (Android male)
Data chose the Command track early in his Starfleet career. As a result he has become the Enterprise's first officer. He is otherwise much like the Data that we are familiar with. He still aspires to become more human.

Lt. Commander William Riker, Second Officer/Operations Manager (Human male)
An ambitious officer, his career suffered a setback ofter he refused to let the Captain of the Hood, Owen Paris, lead a dangerous away mission. He was demoted to Lt. Commander, and the 3rd in command of the Hood was made First Officer. Captain Troi does not like him personally for the fact that he had put his career ahead of his relationship with her younger sister Deanna.

Doctor Robert Picard, Chief Medical Officer (Human male)
After his younger brother Jean-Luc was killed in a fight with a Nausican he felt guilty and decided to study medicine. After graduating from medical school he joined Starfleet. One of the ships of which he was CMO includes theStargazer. He was present when Captain Zoma successfully established First Contact with the Ferengi in the Zeta Maxia system.

Ensign Ishara Yar, Alpha Shift Conn Officer (Human female)
She escaped with her older sister Tasha from Turkana IV when she was 11 years old. She also followed Tasha into the academy. As the Enterprise is launched she receives news that Tasha has been killed by some sort of pure evil in the Armus system...

Ensign Kurn, Beta Shift Conn Officer (Klingon male)
He was rescued by Sergi Roschenko from Khitomer after the Romulans attacked that planet. He does not know what became of this family, including his older brother Worf...
He is also the first Klingon in Starfleet.

Lt. Beverly Howard, Tactical Officer (Human female)
Beverly joined Starfleet to explore, and later felt that the Tactical positions were mostly filled with people with less empathy than usual. As such she tries to persue her duties without being too overbearing.

Counselor Geordi La Forge (Human male)
Geordi studied Psychology and then joined Starfleet. He is assigned to the Enterprise straight out of the Academy. His VISOR allows him to see physiological changes in his patients, which helps him to ascertain their mental states.

Lt. Commander Miles OBrien, Chief Engineer (Human male)
O'Brien went to Starfleet Academy and worked in the Engineering departments on many Starships being assigned to the Enterprise as Chief Engineer.

Have you ever seen "Parallels"? While not quite as crazy as some of the things you're suggesting, you do at least get to see the captain, first officer, and a few other positions shift around.

I remember thinking at the time it would have been cool to see a universe with Tasha Yar as captain. It seemed pretty straightforward, the evil ink blob kills Riker instead of her, she's promoted to first officer, and takes over as captain after Picard is assimilated.

I wanted to mention that in addition to the TNG ep Parallels, other influences were Yesterday's Enterprise and a novel that depicts the TNG crew we know meeting with the crew from the YE universe, as well as one where Jack Crusher is captain of Enterprise, Picard is first officer, Data is a humanoid being, and Riker had been recently released from a Cardassian prison -- I think it was Q Squared. -- RR
