"Master of Puppets." Great metal album or greatest metal album ever?

I haven't listened to "Master" in ages but I used to positively worship it as the pinnacle of metal. And now I'm listening to it again and it holds up. It's one of the few things I can think of that holds up to my memory. Especially "Orion". That used to blow my mind. And it still does today.

So, if there's a better metal album out there I'd love to hear about it.

Master was, and still is, one of the best metal albums ever.

It's a great album, but probably not my favourite, which would be The Sound of White Noise by Anthrax.

Slipknot-Slipknot
Pantera-Vulgar Display Of Power
KoRn-KoRn
Type O Negative-Bloody Kisses
Metallica-Metallica(Black Album)

:)

Slipknot-Slipknot

Yes. But only that first album.

KoRn-KoRn

You know what? I got into Korn when I was 14 and they were my gateway into actual metal. They were the first arena concert I ever saw. But that album does not hold up in the way say, Rage Against The Machine's self titled effort does. RATM's first album is desert-island for me. And Korn was important for me but I'm kind of embarassed about it now.

What's just as good in your mind?

While not considered heavy metal any longer, it would have to be Van Halen's debut album, Van Halen. Particularly the song "Eruption", but "Runnin' with the Devil" is still my favorite.

I saw KoRn & Metallica during the same show with System Of A Down, Powerman 5000 & Kid Rock...KoRn & Metallica were awesome.

[edit] I agree the first KoRn & Slipknot albums were great...I still like both bands and the rest of their stuff.

Are you a guitar player? I only ask because I can't even enjoy "Eruption" anymore. I can almost play it but not quite.

It's almost not even a piece of music anymore and instead the yardstick by which you measure your dick as a guitar player.

I'm only a young'un, so that's just hard rock to me, but it's undoubtedly one of (if not the) greatest rock albums ever. In fact, I listened to the whole album through just yesterday

As for MoP, definitely up there as one of the best and most influential metal albums ever (at least, from the era). As for the best, I'd say no. It still holds up well, but to me it's not Metallica's best album, and there are plenty of better metal albums that have come around since. None of these will be as influential or remembered as MoP of course, because it was breaking ground, so I guess it depends on your criteria.

I'm, at best, a novice guitar player, although I have no interest in playing heavy metal. I'm a James Taylor style guitar player.

I saw Korn with Staind as an opener for my first concert. Korn WAS really good. But that show doesn't even rate my top 10 now.

I used to listen to Korn. At the time (and this was some years ago), I was looking for something different, and stumbled onto Korn, and I liked their sound.

Me too. I was looking for any way at all to be different from my friends and my dad and along comes Korn with their loud guitars and their curse words. I was sold

Re: "Master of Puppets." Great metal album or greatest metal album eve

I've seen all of the Big Four in the late 80s and early 90s, for me Anthrax were far and away the best concert, followed by Metallica, then Megadeth, and Slayer limp in last.

I'd love to go to one of the upcoming Big Four gigs, but i'm not free for the UK gig. Plus Joey Belladonna is a fucking embarrasment, I don't think I could bear listening to him for a whole gig.

Re: "Master of Puppets." Great metal album or greatest metal album eve

Don't know if you'd call it metal, but if it is Aenima by Tool is the best.

I wouldn't call it metal in the same way I'd call 80's Metallica metal. And either way I think Lateralus is the better album, though anything Tool does is awesome.

One of my favourite songs of all times regardless of Tool or metal or anything is "The Grudge".

EDIT: Way to send me on a YouTube odyssey, Rageforthemachine

I like music with meaning, which is why I skip past just about 90% of all music.
Anyhoo, I love Korn's Thoughtless. It's just off kilter enough to appeal to me, musically, while having a strong message.
