Depends what you call metal. I'd regard Van Halen, Zeppelin, Lizzy, G'n'R etc as hard rock. Metal, to me, is Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica, Priest, Motorhead etc.

Master best metal album ever? Quite probably, though Ride The Lightning isn't far off it.

A classic album to be sure (though I don't care for it at all). I'd rate the likes of Pantera and System of a Down* well above any Metallica album. SOAD, Slipknot and KoRn aren't really comparable to Metallica though, are they? Stylistically, I mean.

*slight bias there, I think they're the best thing ever and can't wait to see them again at Download. Both they and Metallica were also superb at Reading Festival 2003 too.

^ Pantera, I saw them at Monsters of Rock in 1994. Shit they put on an amazing performance. Most of it is on Youtube actually.

Master of Puppets is a perfect metal album, IMO. Fantastic in every way.

Some others that I'd say are right up there with it...

...And Justice For All - Metallica; Not as well produced as its predecessor, but my god every song is epic in one way or another.

Sabotage - Black Sabbath; Hole in the Sky, Symptom of the Universe, Thrill of it All, Megalomania, The Writ... need I say more?

Wiseblood - Corrosion of Conformity; Just an amazing album. Groovy as fuck. Never fails to put you in a good mood.

Burn My Eyes - Machine Head; Has to be the best debut album from a band ever. Kicks you in the teeth from start to finish. Unfortunate that they couldn't follow it up as well, but this will always be a metal masterpiece.

Any Pantera album from Cowboys From Hell to Reinventing the Steel; If anyone had metal nailed it was Pantera. Onced they ditched the hair metal they made five of the best metal albums you are ever likely to hear.

...though anything Tool does is awesome.

This. Emphatically this. Tool are on another fucking level. Epic band.

Since they've only been mentioned in passing, I'll have to throw in Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction. I generally find Megadeth to be more fun to listen to than Metallica these days anyway.

Still, I'm a classic metal fan, so I would go with Iron Maiden's Powerslave or Black Sabbath's Paranoid (or even Master of Reality) as the best metal album of all time.

I go through fits and spurts where I positively love this album, and then sometimes I just can't listen to it. I really wish It had the kind of sound quality it deserves. Live versions of these songs on a couple of the concert albums really show the potential it has.

I watched some documentary on making the 'Metallica' (Black) album, and in it they mentioned a desire to go back and rerecord or remaster "Justice" and honestly I wish such a project had come about.

I always preferred Dave to his former running buddies so Peace Sells... is probably my favorite pure metal album. Some others on the list

I love a lot of songs off of And Justice for All, but I remember recently I decided to listen to the title track. I got about halfway through it and the thought hit me that I had better things to do with my day. Seriously, that is one long song.

Not as long as Iced Earth's "Dante's Inferno," which is about 15 minutes long. And Venom's "At War With Satan" clocks in around 27 minutes. AJFA is like a Ramones song in comparison, lol.

I listen to Dream Theater, whose average song length is over 10 minutes, so AJFA seems like an average length song to me

The Black Album is definitely metal, and definitely a fantastic album. Much underrated by thrash fans who hate it because the songs don't revolve around thrashing the E string as fast as possible for 4 minutes.

I like Ride The Lightning and And Justice For All much more.
But personally, I've always liked Megadeth much more than Metallica (except that abominable Risk album) ... Latest Megadeth album, Endgame, is orders of magnitude better than anything Metallica did since the Black Album, including.

I have to vote neither. I kind of like Battery, I love the title track, and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is okay, but I don't like any of the other songs from it.

While I'm on the subject of Metallica though, I kind of found their last album really weak. It felt like they forced themselves back into that classic sound because they knew it was what everyone expected and wanted from them, but not necessarily what they wanted. St Anger was a worse album by far, but it was at least created because the band wanted it, not just to appease fans.
