If it's untitled, it's self titled. That's pretty much what self titled means in every other context. But everyone calls it the Black Album anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

I didn't read the link; I don't place much faith in Wikipedia. I know what eponymous means, thank you for asking.

Perhaps Metallica have re-written history but in 1991 I was a very avid reader of all the metal magazines and listened to all the rock shows. They were very, very clear at the time that the album was untitled and got very annoyed when interviewers called it 'Metallica.' They frequently used the fourth Led Zep album as a comparison.

Perhaps they've decided now that it was called Metallica but that definitely wasn't the case upon release.
