Torchwood cut 'like punishment'

I love how RTD's insinuation slags-off US viewers, while at the same time trying to romanticize the budget cuts that dropped Torchwood to just five episodes and half-a-cast.

im not keen on the 5 episode format, I am used to getting more, but I am not keen on this whole 5 nights a week deal.

I might have a life, and that kind of scheduling gets in the way of that life

Whereas in other interviews he's perfectly blunt about the budget factors: "I don’t think it was ever likely to get a run of 13 hours on BBC One, I don’t think BBC One could actually afford that any more." The one quote from him the Radio Times used in a two-page article isn't necessarily the only thing he said to their interviewer...

Yeah, absolutely fair enough. It could be the journalistic slant...

To be blunt, I only watch the show because it's a DW spin-off. On it's own merits, well, there are better shows out there.

Perhaps this format will give the show more focus. I found the puerile relationships tiresome and the plots disjointed and messy up until now, with a few exceptions. It never seemed to be able to make up its mind what it was. The trailers for this one look have a more DW feel to them.

The whole 13 episode format is an attempt to appeal to the international market anyway, 5 or 6 quality episodes instead of a long diluted series is more like what you'd normally expect from the BBC, so I don't really see the problem.

License fee wise? I hope not, I don't want my license fee going to the "light channel". I don't think i've watched a single ITV show in 10 years.

13 episodes isn't a new thing for the BBC. Blakes 7 had 13 episode series in the late 70s/early 80s as well. Personally I like series that last around the 13 ep mark. 6 eps fly by whilst the US 20+ ep seasons means a lot of padding.

But is there a norm for the BBC?

Pretty much every season of Spooks has been a different length (ranging from 6 to 10 I think) Coupling had no consistency either with a shorter 1st and 4th seasons.
