Ah, well, then never mind. I can't tell how old the new M'Benga actor is, but he looks like he could have a teenage son. According to the internet, Booker Bradshaw was in his late 20s when he was on Star Trek, which would be about 10 years in the future of this show.
What might be interesting is if we find out he has a son currently in medical school and considering joining Starfleet Medical. (Hey worked for the deceased Captain Garrovick and Commodore Matt Decker).

He has a son in the Doctor McCoy: Frontier Doctor comic and a great grand daughter in the Shatnerverse novels, if I recall correctly.
Do you think they'll override Mark Piper and just make M'Benga, the direct predecessor to Leonard McCoy as CMO of the Enterprise? basically Retcon that McCoy's been on board since Day 1 of Kirk's command?
I agree with what others have said: M'Benga can leave to go study on Vulcan at some point. Then, he can return later and be ready to slap Spock back to consciousness in "A Private Little War."
Could have been, then McCoy leaves on special assignment to Capella and Piper fills in for him. Only issue is that Scotty doesn't know how long McCoy was there, but it would still work if Scotty came aboard after McCoy left.
But it would still be simpler if Kirk requests him and he's unavailable until the Capella assignment is over.

I don't see them retconning as much as simply filling in areas that are virtual blank slates, hopefully with an emphasis on what works best for the story they are telling.
As it should be so their show is their show. TOS is still TOS even if SNW changes its connections to it. And SNW is SNW. I can make the separation and enjoy both, individually and as part of a larger tapestry.
