M'Benga Character Teaser

It would make sense if M'Benga takes a leave of absence to study on Vulcan. The Enterprise could pick him up again in Amok Time, right before his first appearance in A Private Little War.

Discovery still has not mastered giving its characters authentic, individual voices, so forgive me if I express concern about the fairly terrible dialogue in some of the other teasers. There’s really no need to be rude and patronizing.
I agree. But basing dialogue of an entire season on what's in 30 second trailers is a bit of an overreaction.

...The "flagship" comment is gonna be like pulling the pin on a grenade but I can live with it. I'm way beyond the point where it's worth being anal about some of the continuity stuff; for me that ship sailed a long time ago...
How about this? It was the flagship while Pike was Captain (him already being one of the top 5 most decorated captains in the Fleet) and that title went with him to his next command as Fleet Captain. Thus Kirk doesn't command "the flagship" in TOS. ??? :)

Also good to see that he's also wearing the "proper" Scienes insignia, not the Disco-style badge with a cross.
The badge with the cross was seen in TOS, it was worn by Chapel.
Yup. Makes sense to have medical personal distinguished. And Discovery had the science orb too on their badges.
We need more than The Orville's TOS/TNG 'memberberries (Roddenberries?) to make this as good as it can be.
No, good stories will make it good. Not the constant desire to lean in to the past, like an old football player reliving glory days.
Weird that M'Benga is CMO and a full commander but apparently gets demoted in favour of McCoy
Careers take different turns. McCoy could have several more years experience and would be treated as the more senior, even if at equal rank and chief medical officer. M'Benga could simply be the assistant department head.

Decent explanation, if still an annoyinyling poor use of the term flagship.

This looked really good. I'm digging the SNW set design, it's giving me those 2009 vibes. A good update/reboot of TOS. Weird that M'Benga is CMO and a full commander but apparently gets demoted in favour of McCoy. Perhaps they'll retcon them to joint CMOs when McCoy inevitably arrives in season 3.

I just hope the stories are good. Which... may or may not be the case. I know it's a different team of writers and producers to Enterprise, but those first 2 seasons left scars. We need more than The Orville's TOS/TNG 'memberberries (Roddenberries?) to make this as good as it can be.
Cmolo is a position not a rank. M'benga could still be a commander when he returns to serve aboard the Enterprise in TOS S2.

And the hell they had Beverly Crusher get promoted to being the Head of Starfleet Medical; but by S3 of TNG she was back just being the CMO of the 1701-D.

So it just may be that some doctors in the 23rd and 24th centuries seek something other than Rank and Position if they're in Starfleet.

I love that M'Benga's medical blue is a different, lighter shade from the science blue
Just like McCoy's. I think?

He wasn't a flag officer. He's a ship's captain.

Looking at the rank thing across the other teasers. I think everyone has zero, one or two stripes. Which would match how it was done in WNMHGB.

Makes sense to have medical personal distinguished.
Yes, it does. There's a well-established Starfleet medical symbol, based on a stylised caduceus. It originated with TMP but has been used in-universe as far back as Enterprise.

And Discovery had the science orb too on their badges.
Culber and Pollard both wore the new white uniform variant with the black cross symbol on silver badges, not the Sciences badge.
