Thai Cave Rescue

It was so wonderful to find out that the 12 boys and their coach are alive after being missing and trapped for 9 days. However it seems that to get them out of the cave system might take weeks or even months.

The moment they were discovered to be alive by two British divers.

That is some brilliant news - although I don't recall hearing/reading anything about it.

Glad to see this story has a happy middle, but the end is far from certain. I read that getting them out would require treacherous cave diving. Authorities are worried that the rescue might end in tradgy for the young. I hope they can find a way

I have been following the story for days. I thought that they all must have drowned and I was so happy when I woke up to the news this morning that they were alive.

I thought it was a major story around the world but it looks like it might not have been. It probably will be now.

They are saying there are three possible ways to get them out

1) teach them basic scuba diving and take them out that way. However the tunnels they would have to go through are narrow and filled with water.

2) wait to the water recedes but this might take weeks even with all the pumping that being done.

3) Find a ‘back door’ maybe via the ventilation shafts. Even if they could only get them to safer location where they could sit out the flooding.

This is a rough situation. Ultimately, the only way to get them out is by taking each one through the submerged passages. From what I understand, some of them are so narrow & blinded by muddy water, they might be required to go it on their own. They've already been in there like 10 or 11 days now. They'll need to be nourished & hydrated, & somehow taught to make it out. It's seriously ugly, but not impossible

Luckily they lived. The soccer coach took them all the way into the cave system in order to escape the heavy rain.

I feel very upset thinking of those poor kids there now with their rescue still so fraught :(

I hope they get them some food soon.

What is known so far.

A team of 7 Thai Navy SEALS, including a doctor and a nurse, have reached the boys. The boys’ condition have been described as mostly being ‘green’ with maybe a couple of the boys being ‘yellow’ due to minor injuries and weakness. None of them are in red condition.

They have been given protein gels.

A phone has been set up in the cave and the boys have been able to speak with their families. EDITED TO ADD - later report say that this has not happened yet.

A meal of pork and rice should reach them soon.

A request has been made for small size full face masks because these are the best face masks for beginner divers.

None of the boys know how to swim.

The coach might face charges of neglect when he gets out of the cave.

This may be judgemental and unfair, but I hope that coach who thought it was totally responsible to put other people's children in that position faces the full weight of the law.

Even if nothing else happens to make this situation any worse the death of that brave, selfless man and the suffering of the children and all the families involved is squarely on his head. I don't care one jot that it was some form of team tradition, that's why we have brains of our own, to make decisions and take responsibility for them.

It's a nightmare, like all our phobias in one. It's hard not to feel emotional and helpless. I keep thinking "Why can't they..." Yet 'they' are doing all that is humanly possible.

(Some years ago in Australia there was a terrible mine collapse. Two of the miners were rescued two weeks later. There is hope...)

I do pray for them.

That occurred here in Tasmania back in 2006. Both men suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and one of them recently had his marriage break up. So I imagine that these boys will also end up with PTSD. However most of the Andes Survivors coped after their rescue and that has been put down to the fact that they knew each other well and were able to support each other emotionally after their ordeal so maybe team spirit will help these boys as well.

The coach lived in a Buddhist temple for 10 years and he taught the boys meditation to calm them.

One of the Chilean Miners has sent the boys a video message.

Some very sad news - one of the Navy Seals trying to rescue the boys has died as a result of lack of oxygen.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-44734385
The boys are going to be weak from oxygen deprivation, panicky and squirming around as they're being pulled along by the divers through the submerged sections, and possibly may even have to try and squeeze through the narrowest parts themselves, because the cave gets too narrow for the divers to even wear SCUBA gear at times. Those poor kids are going to be even more terrified than they already are. :(

Sometimes the word hero gets thrown around too casually, but Saman epitomized it, as do the other divers still risking their lives.

This is rather grim, & frankly, it could all go tragically at any time. They've been unable to find a back door, a trained diver has died during the 2.5 mile swim to reach them, trying to pump out water is having nearly no effect, more rain is due on Sunday. The cave's oxygen flow is about 5% below normal & dropping, & even though they likely have O2 tanks by now, the effects will be very detrimental. Those poor people inside are struggling for their lives, & that is the absolute worst condition to be in, if undertaking a 5 hour treacherous dive is to be considered

However, it's all time sensitive as to what call should be made. Tandem diving them out very soon may be the least treacherous option. You're choice is do something now, & maybe lose some of them, or keep waiting & maybe lose all of them. Plus, if making them dive out is the best option, the sooner the better, because their condition will undoubtedly deteriorate. This is a real shit situation TBH

It seems that no charges will be bought against the coach if he does get out. The sign states that the cave closed on 1st July and the team went in on the 23rd of June. He did not disobey any warning. The families of the boys are being supportive towards the coach.

At least all the best divers and experts on hand to help with the rescue. Elon Musk has sent some of his best SpaceX/Boring engineers to help.
