That was fast.

The pilot is already up to #15 and episode 2 is in the top 30. And this is with it being on Netflix everywhere except in the USA. (Though I understand it wasn't actually released until today.)

I can't exactly say I'm surprised by this development - though it would be interesting to compare these numbers to other streaming-exclusive shows and see if there are spikes in piracy when they get new episodes as well.

Looking at Pirate Bay's list, the first season of Narcos is pretty high up there, and that's a Netflix show. Game of Thrones is all over the list and that's something you have to pay for too.

I think overall, people who pirate are going to pirate no matter what.

Had this show been on Netflix in the USA I'm guessing there would be far less streaming or downloading. I know people who are viewing this show other than CBS all access. They talk about it openly at work.

Pirate-shame all you want, but pirating fulfills an existing market. IMO, it's rather telling that a market's only claim to legitimacy is in it's ability to be monetized. (Disclaimer: I subscribed to CBSAA solely for STD.)

I'm not at all surprised. Hell, the CBS All Access app has to be one of the worst streaming apps around. It won't work on my Roku (I kept timing out and getting errors), wouldn't work right on my iPad until I dicked around with it for about twenty minutes. A friend of mine tried to watch it on her iPhone, and it wouldn't even play the episode. I have an Android tablet, and the app just kinda crashed and burned. After more than half an hour of messing around with it all, I just went to CBS.com to watch it, and got a "watch this video on CBS.com!" message instead of the episode, and that was on the website. I finally got it to work in Microsoft Edge, with no explanation as to why. Even then, I had to watch it in 480p instead of HD.

From what I've read online, I wasn't the only one experiencing these issues that night, either. This is CBS' crowning achievement. Well done, guys. *slow clap*

Just like Game Of Thrones. Absolutely expected this. What I am ecstatic about though is the "no review copies" going out, at least it's not getting spoiled or leaked in advance of airing like GOT. They need to continue that.

I'm not paying for this. I know the traditional commercials-paid broadcast TV business model won't support putting Star Trek on regular CBS television - hell, that's why Netflix had to be brought in as the white knight, to underwrite the production costs.

That said, Pirate Bay won't be the reason it fails. It'll either swim on it's on, or more likely sink. Simply put - there's aren't enough American and Canadian Star Trek fans to pay for this. I predict that CBS All Access implodes.

I just hope that the show overall is good enough that if it crashes and burns maybe Netflix will just pick it up. There is a good chance that if all access fails they will just blame discovery and point to all the delays and problems the production had and decide Trek is more trouble than it's worth.

This is, contrary to popular belief, actually a very good sign. The top pirated shows are always among the most beloved, most-watched, and most talked-about.

Westworld, Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones topped the list last year. Dexter and Breaking Bad were regularly in the top 10.

Many top 10 most downloaded are on free over-the-air broadcast networks. The Flash, Arrow, Gotham, Lucifer, Big Bang Theory...

Proving that the primary motivation for pirating is love for the show, not just to get around paying for it.

Very good points, all around. I would have subscribed to Netflix in a heartbeat if it was available here,in the USA on Netflix.

That, and for some folks there's simply no other way to see the show because they live in a country that doesn't get it for years at a time. You'd think in an age of instant access technology we would have gotten around this, but never underestimate human beings to complicate a simple signal.

Do you work on a pirate ship? badumpbump

CBSAA may well implode. But it's clear that the powers-that-be intend to give it a long gestation period to find it's legs. It's been online for 3 years, and only now are starting with original program. They have 3-5 new shows planned.

I would wait 3-5 years before declaring whether the app is good or bad. Hard to judge when it's a work in progress.. Many people laughed at Netflix Streaming before 2010 or so when the content was spotty, lackluster, and always changing. Then they starting doing big exclusive deals, before starting to produce their own shows like House of Cards, and resurrecting cancelled ones like Longmire, Arrested Development, and The Killing.

I would love to see CBS resurrect older properties as online exclusives, like Twilight Zone, Magnum PI, heck-- why not TJ Hooker with William Shatner?

This is good.
More people watching it -> more people talking about it -> even more people willing to watch it
-> new subscribers, people catching up renting DVDs, or simply pirates buying merchandise later on.
More viewers is always good. In the end it will work out in favour of the product.

Now I'm not advocating for piracy here. Don't do that! It's illegal.
But I'm also not advocating for spreading content behind different paywalls. This is a system that simply won't work long-term. The music industry learned it the hard way. Now it's a role model. With every content being available everywhere after short time, people having a free market choice, and artists still being fully compensated for their work.

The streaming tv-industry will learn it, too. It has to, otherwise it won't survive. Pirating content simply is not comparable to steeling objects. As soon as content is available, people are going to watch it. If there's no easy, legal way to watch it (which, in the current system, there is NOT - it's simply impossible to subscribe to ALL streaming services), people will watch it illegal. And there's nothing the industry can do to fight it. Except reform itself.
Which is going to happen. But until then? There will be pirates ahead!

Add me to the pile of people with All-Access issues, unfortunately, but I'm going to continue subscribing for as long as I am enjoying the show because I can afford to do so right now and I'd like to see Trek succeed.

But yeah, captions were all over the place and (more importantly) I'm pretty sure I was watching a 480p version. It was grainy. The PS4 app has, like, no real settings to speak of, either, so I can't seem to adjust it manually.
