Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2's Star Trek Beyond homage.

Noticed last night while watching GOTG Vol 2 that they did an homage to Beyond's warp effect.

I noticed that too, although I suspect it's more a case of the same artists with the same ideas about depicting FTL travel working on both, than one copying the other. I know Sean Hargreaves, who did most of the Beyond design, now does design for Marvel movies.

I don't think it would be a Hargreaves concept. As I recall, the Beyond warp effect grew out of Double Negative's R&D for the gravity-warping effects for the black hole in "Interstellar," and they applied that know-how for a more modern FTL effect in STB. It doesn't look like DNeg worked on GotG2, so I think "homage" or "parallel evolution" or "the style of the time" is a more on-base explanation for the similarity.

What is that stream of stuff the Enterprise is spewing behind itself?

Well, just like with a Star Destroyer, it's protocol to jettison the trash before going into hyperdrive. So it stands to reason that it's SOP for Federation vessels to dump their human waste compartments as they enter warp.. Maybe it gives them that extra "push." :D :D

Funny enough, I was watching Vol. 2 with the wife on Sunday night and remarked several times that the film felt similar to Beyond.

But one had "Star Trek" attached to it, the other "Marvel". It is a tough road if you aren't attached to the "it" brand of the moment.

^^ Oh.. Just give it time... Something tells me that one day, there will be mouse ears hidden in the design of the Enterprise...

I'd be fine with that because CBS and Paramount are clueless on how to handle Trek. Disney may overstaturate with Star Wars now, but they know how to market and appeal to a mass audience.

I don't disagree with you at all.. With the money they can put behind a product and the talent they have in marketing and advertising? They COULD make it huge in ways CBS and Paramount could only dream... But to King Daniel Beyond's point... Exactly.. You can only have so many tentpoles, and I fear with Marvel, Star Wars and eventually Indiana Jones, there might not be enough room... Sadly, we've seen what happened with Tron, which, admittedly is not on the same level as Trek, but still... They had big plans to continue it and then *poof*... Nada...

I did not like either effect.Beyond looked like a irregular smoke bubble.
