Police: Fight over Star Wars and Star Trek led to assault

by Austin Prickett

OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —

Police say a fight over Star Trek and Star Wars led to an assault in the metro.

Jerome Dewayne Whyte, 23, was arrested July 1 on a complaint of assault and battery, possession of marijuana and outstanding Oklahoma County warrants.

Oklahoma City Police Department reports show that Whyte and another man were in the living room of an apartment in the 1400 block of NW 16 Street when they began arguing if Star Wars or Star Trek was better. The victim told police he became frustrated and stated "You're just a trick" before walking back to his room.

Whyte allegedly followed the man and shoved him to the ground. The victim got back up and told police he stated "You wanna replay that?" and was once again shoved to the ground. Police say Whyte then wrapped his arm around the victim's neck and began choking him. The victim was near unconsciousness when he pulled out a pocket knife. Whyte let go and reached for the knife, cutting himself. He then left the room.

Police later arrested Whyte and booked him into the Oklahoma County Jail.

Okay, then...

Have you ever gotten into an argument over this topic? Personally, I prefer Trek. I don't know that much about Star Wars except what I've been able to glean secondhand (thru Foxtrot comics, etc)

The existence of a rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars fans is such a myth is almost ridiculous. You can be a fan of both, maybe you have a preference for one over the other, but there aren't any sort of cliques between the two fandoms where it's one or the other. Hell here on Trek BBS we have a forum dedicated to Star Wars which has several of the forums more prominent posters contributing to the discussions.

As for this story, it sounds as if these guys have much more serious problems than a disagreement over Star Trek and Star Wars anyway.

Why stick to just one thing? I like both for different reasons, depending on the mood of the hour. Just like how I like both DC and Marvel, and classical and popular music. I'm always looking for something new, and to find out as much as I can about all kinds of different things, even if it's not something that may not seem to appeal to me at first on the surface.

IDIC, there are lots of shows/films that I love and lots that I hate. And every where inbetween. How about we don't critise others for not liking to watch the same things we do.

And I rarely post in the SW forum as I'm trying to avoid spoilers same with the Discovery forum.

Yeah, obviously sometimes there is this false rivalry put up when there doesn't need to be one. If I have to hear one more fight over Marvel vs DC....

So of course I love both. I loved Star Wars before I ever loved Star Trek.

Though...once I discovered Trek, there was no going back, really.

I'm a SCIENCE FICTION fan - even though I don't think of Star Wars as proper Sci Fi, I still like it quite well (less said about Ewoks though...).

They're both space opera: folks in silly suits with ray guns, space ships, and aliens. Anyone getting worked up over them needs the SNL Shatner speech.

Y'know, it's stupid shit like this that is why the members of the "mundane" world perceive genre fandom as freak shows and morons, completely incapable of functioning as a humans and out of touch with reality, destined for a padded room with strong medications and soothing music. That insipid movie "Trekkies" and its sequel didn't do the fandom any favors, either.
