News "Police: Fight over Star Wars and Star Trek led to assault"

Okay - you just lost ALL your arguments with THAT statement.

Not really. We were basically the same age. We got along together when we were kids so I just formed a little crush on her. Kids can develop weird attractions. I was also into Punky Brewster, Barroness and Lady Jaye from GiJoe and when I was in kindergarden I would flirt with these 2 Indian girls who were twins. My entire bit was to pretend to get confused as to who was who. Also was kind of into this girl in junior high who would always call me names and make fun of me.

If they aren't hurting anyone though I just don't see the issue. In the end it doesn't matter what the world thinks of us. I think religion is pretty silly for example but if people are into that then who am I to judge them for it. I even think some of that stuff they do in the movie is silly but like religion it also doesn't seem to be enough reason to judge them to harshly. People only become problem if they are hurting other people and i'm not sure being used as a example of being weird counts as hurting people.

Plus I think most of the people in the movie come off as a decent human beings even if they do seem silly or strange and to me that is more important.

Yes but what does perception really mean? If I wore a starfleet uniform all day what does it matter to me if some guy in Alabama thinks I am nuts. I will never see that guy in my life and even if people in my town thinks that it still doesn't matter. I could care less what any my neighbors think about me right now and I doubt I would much care anymore if I started dressing up in costumes. If they can't see me for me then that is their lost.

Also the lady who went to juror duty had a job. Remember she wanted all of her co-workers to call her commander. You had one guy who was a dentist. I figure almost everyone in the movie was employed. It actually takes money to do some of those things like making your truck look like a starfleet ship and the money has to come from someone working.

The problems come from the way people treat us when they assume that all Trekkies are like these kinds of people.
I was harassed and made fun of pretty much from grade school through high school for being a nerd.

IIRC, she seemed to think she was. That's why she wore the uniform.

From what I recall she was more into the idea's of what starfleet represented. I don't think she thought that she had gone to starfleet academy and served time on a starship or anything like that. Basically a more eccentric version of wearing a ribbon to show you support some cause. I think she knew the difference between reality and fiction. She just wanted to add a little fiction to her reality.

The problem though is with the people who harass. Nobody can control what bullies will do. People shouldn't have to live their lives out of fear of how mean people are going to react. If all it takes to set people off is a movie then they have some serious issue's that go beyond seeing weird acting Trek fans.

The whole thing feels like we are wanting to blame the victims or inocent people for what unlightend or bad people might think or say.

Well she did cross the line when she gave a interview. I imagine the interview had nothing to do with the whitewater trial and it had all to do with her wearing the uniform. Perhaps that's why she agreed to it. I am curious as to what her motives were for doing that.

One thing I find interesting is the whitewater trial itself would cross the line when it comes to acceptable behavior. Went from a trial about some scheme I think the Clintons were supose to have done to being used as a political excuse to bring down Bill Clinton with a Gotcha question with him lying about a blowjob.
