Would you be able to survive?

If my partner was "The Bush Tucker Man" or Crocodile Dundee... I suspect I could be very happy, and even grow fat there. :D

By the way, there are some great survival tools out there, esp. at REI. I'm thinking of putting together a couple containers of emergency/survival gear (including food), and the first thing I'd put in is this awesome fire-starter:

I need the firestarter just for my apartment. I am a destroyer or grill lighters. I swear they refuse to work for me because it's funny.

hopefully if I was in such a situation I'd only be lost for a week . . . then I'd either be rescued or find my way to a road or something

I love watching survivorman, but since I really have no experience in the wilderness I would be pretty miserable

If you were dropped in the middle of a gigantic forest with a knife, a rope, and whatever happened to be on you at the moment (cellphone, shoelaces, belt and belt buckle, etc), how confident are you that you would be able to survive?

What do you think you'd excel at, in the wild? Are you a good hunter? Would you be able to build the best shelters, or find the best berries and roots?

Personally, I think I'd make one hell of a shelter. I think I'd have a moderate amount of difficulty getting a fire together, but I know in general two fire-making tips that could work with enough effort. And, of course, the more you practice, the easier it would get. I'm not sure I'd have the knowledge to hunt or gather effectively, however.

What about you?

I would be fine. Like Snow White, I would make nice with all the pretty little wild animals, and they would lead me to the nearest Ranger Station, singing all the way.

If that didn't work, I do carry a small buck knife and I suppose I could set a trap for a rabbit with my bra.

Fire-starter is a great track! Yeah, I'd definitely take that with me anywhere I went.

Seriously, that's an ultra cool gadget Dukat. Must get up the nose of hardcore campers...

I love that kind of stuff. I used to be a camper/hiker back in the day. Now we don't really have the leisure time to devote to that kind of stuff, but it would be cool to even set a tent up in the yard at some point and camp out there, and try out some of these cool devices. ;)

^ You don't know how right you are... just the other day, we were asking each other if we knew anybody with a vegetable garden and chickens and rabbits...

With the Mayan calendar and all... and the Earth and sun's pole shift and pole reversal set for 2012... scary times!

The Bush Tucker man is awesome but I wouldn't trust Hogan...he'd probably use you as a food tester to see which are the berries that taste like burning.

^Yeah, first order of business this spring is to get some outdoor stuff going. Like a big veggie garden, a firepit area, an extension off the shed for making things with wood... :D

Not a chance in hell, I eat loads of vegetables but don't know the first thing about plants, if you know what I mean. I'd probably end up eating poisonous mushrooms.

I would be dead very quickly. I'm not an outdoorsman. I don't like camping. My idea of hiking is going along some tame trail surrounded by civilization for an afternoon and being back home in time for dinner. I can't hunt. I can't build things out of twigs and leaves. I get cold easily.

Let's face it - I'm a wuss. ;)

Any camper worth his or her salt knows that you don't complain about things that make starting fires easier. ;)

Anyway, I think I'd probably do okay, at least for a little while. I know how to build shelter and I could probably start a fire with a little time and effort. I think my biggest difficulty would come from hunting, since I've never actually done it. If I had to, I'm familiar with the basics of how to check if a plant is safe to eat, but that's time-consuming and dangerous, so I'd be much better off if I could learn to catch animals.

I know how to kill them in a whole bunch of unholy ways. Also if you need something to watch your property get a goose. Those things are mean as hell and will chase someone down way more than a dog.

Indeed. I live in a forest, so it's handy to know how to keep yourself alive in case of the worst. And I took a survival course at my local Air Force base, which helps!
