Why nu instead of new?

Really stupid question but I tend to overthink things. Why are the reboots referred to as nu with that spelling? Wouldn't n-e-w make more sense? Is there a reason why it's spelled n-u?

Because it speaks the truth when you permutate the first two letters.

*DUCKS*

Wait, how are there no tomatoes fl...

I didn't really mean...

It's because of our Dark Lord, Robau, whu delcared that all "ew" sounds be spelled out with U's.

Think about it. New Trek sounds like a computer action to create mountain treks, and like all those treks your grandfather forgot to give a name to. It blends perfectly with New Folder and New Text Document. And not only it is way way too garden variety, but there's no corruption of nu that sounds worse than "ewTrek". Seriously. And if somehow someone decides to act clever and spell that as uTrek, you'll just nerd it back and spell it µTrek.

And now that, that can evolve into muTrek for the giggles.

νTrek FTW

Seriously, it's become a thing to use "nu" to indicate a reboot of an old property. Pretty sure people were referring to the Battlestar Galactica reboot as "nuBSG" long before the new Trek movies came along.

They were.

It's a convention which has been in use in one place or another for at least the last 20 years. See the "nuMetal" label mentioned and linked by draculasaurus above; I remember that tag being applied to Limp Bizkit well before their outing at the Woodstock '94 festival, so the use of the "nu" prefix is hardly new.

Because eventually, referring to a film from 2009 as "New Trek" would seem silly and dated, especially if we get more reboots and movies.
