Why did they get rid of Tasha Yar?

WendyNotsid

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
I mean, this was a show that had Wesley Crusher and Counselor Cleavage and the one they kill off is Yar?

Granted, there were things about her that weren't great, but this is the first season we're talking about. I feel like she really didn't get much of a chance.

Denise Crosby wanted out. She was hopin' for more character development, and it wasn't happenin', so she asked to be let go. I did read that if there had been more bits like the teaser for 'Skin of Evil' between Yar & Worf, she would have stuck around longer.

Boy that didn't turn out to well, didn't she later regret leaving the show years later?

I would have regretted it something fierce. I always wondered if Terry Farrell regretted leaving DS9.

I really kind of liked Yar. I kind of find it hard to believe that they were never going to develop her character more. I mean, they developed Lwaxana Troi (who I LOVED) and she wasn't even a regular character.

I doubt it - at best, she would've had another year's paycheck. Maybe if there were DS9 movies or something, but there's not all that much missed opportunity for Dax.

Crosby, meanwhile, still had 6 seasons and 4 movies she could've been in. ;)

As far as Denise leaving, love her or hate her, we got a lot more Worf as a result, and I think that's a good thing.

Worf really didn't have anything to do until after he became Chief of Security.

I could never take Yar seriously, so I was glad when the big Klingon took over.

I'm sure that's why she got back on the show as Sela.

I don't know, this might be revisionist history on my part, but I would have been really interested to see the direction they took Worf in had Yar stuck around. I personally think it would have been better. Before he was Chief of Security, Worf seemingly was a "Bridge Officer" and a command track one at that. I saw him as someone who wanted to one day command his own ship, so he did this job learning all about starship operations to do it. He could do weapons, science, conn, ops, engineering... everything a captain needs to be able to do. This could have created great potential for story plots, especially since it wasn't traditionally Klingon like Security was.

Either way, did Chief of Security really help him much? I mean, what did that inherently change about his character. It allowed him to say things like direct hit, shields up, hailing frequencies open, shields down to --%, phasers locked, and other such gems. No, his development was tied to his character and his personality, which is how a lot of characters were shaped. Jobs had little to do with it. When the characters become just reflections of what they're doing, that's when the show has failed (IMO, of course). Worf was a character with lots of potential with or without his job and he probably would have had a lot of interesting stories with Yar there or without her there.

I dont think the actors new how big the show would become from interviews i remember. But the decision still seems premature for denise crosby.

I think they could of done something with her character and Data certainly had a thing for her. The writers could of work on that.

I'm sure that's why she got back on the show as Sela.

Two returns as Yar (YE and AGT), two as Sela (Redemption and Unification II)

She easily could have been bought back as Sela in Nemesis, or even DS9's later seasons. Not like they didn't deal with Romulans.

Wasn't Worf supposed to be a throw away character with little screen time? He certianly did the best out of the TNG crew what with getting the part in DS9 too. I liked Yar and thought it was sad when she left. Worf has never been one of my favourite characters but I think he looked better as chief of security than Yar did.

I don't think anyone cared about her posing in Playboy. TNG has always been left-wing. I'm guessing Roddenberry didn't mind at all.
Yar was done away with because Denise wanted to leave, but seriously, she was such a terrible actress that the role couldn't really develop much. Her line deliveries are frequently cringe-worthy - Bow down to what Starfleet has become! You jewel! I only wish the skin of evil could have killed Wesley as well. Counselor Cleavage was good for ratings.

This, minus the Wesley hate.

Yeah, she kind of killed her career by leaving... not talented enough to do anything else really notable. But I think she'd have improved over time, if she'd given it the chance.

I'm very glad her departure gave Worf a bigger role, as he was a terrific part of the team. :)

wasn't there some controversy about her posing for Playboy?

Nothing to do with her leaving her TNG role. Wikipedia says: "Following her appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation, nude photos of Crosby that originally appeared in the March 1979 edition of Playboy magazine were republished in the May 1988 issue. In the pictorial, Crosby was featured as a new-wave model, with the additional angle of being the granddaughter of the legendary Bing Crosby."

Have you never seen the full frontals of a young Nichelle Nichols that often appear in mags like "Celebrity Skin"? Roddenberry had no problem with using nude centrefolds on Trek.
