Which version of TOS is canon??

I'd have to say the remastered version is "canon", if for no other reason that if any other series currently being made makes reference to TOS (i.e. showing a scene, planet, character, etc.), it's going to be the remastered one they use.

For example, if a future series shows a clip of something like the Romulan fleet surrounding the Enterprise in "The Enterprise Incident", it's not going to be all Klingon ships like in the original, but one Klingon and two Romulan BOPs like in the remastered ep.

Or if another series has Flint turn up, and it shows his mansion, it'll look like what we see in the remastered series, not the original.

they’d probably look completely different, honestly...visual reboots are a thing in Star Trek these days.

I would assume, and hope the animated series is also equally canon, along with the remastered TOS. I know there are some who may disagree. I'm a Trekkie, not a perfectionist!

These days, TAS is treated as part of the whole. Lower Decks has given us multiple TAS references, including a Caitian regular (though she looks more like a housecat than a lioness), an Edo(si)an, a Vendorian, a mention in dialogue of the giant Spock clone on Phylos, etc.

I really love the animated series, and recently just bought the entire collection, both vhs and dvd mediums. (I also have every episode from TOS on vhs too!)

I just realized today after rewatching "The Slaver Weapon," the Kzinti were aliens in Larry Niven's book: "Ringword!" I highly recommend reading the whole series...a most excellant writing!

"The Slaver Weapon" was Niven's own adaptation of his 1967 Known Space novella "The Soft Weapon," the second story to feature the Kzinti (between "The Warriors" in 1966 and Ringworld in 1970) and the debut of Nessus, the puppeteer who would later be featured in Ringworld. In fact, it's a startlingly exact adaptation -- not so much adapting the story to fit the Trek universe as plugging three Trek characters into the Known Space universe in the roles of "The Soft Weapon"'s three leads.

I say it's up to you the viewer or purchaser of the media available! If you only like TOS and TAS that's okay, if you like them and TNG good too. If you add DS9 and VOY, splendid! If you only like TNG and DS9 then that's good for you!
But just do what's good for you I think is the best idea! :techman:
